I've been before in the 90s, but I doubt I'll ever go back. Too many other places in the Caribbean to visit that are far more stable.

We went there on our Sr trip in 96. About 20 of us 17-18 year olds ran around Cancun unsupervised for a whole week. Had a hell of time. Sucks the world sucks so bad nowdays.

Class of '96 too. About 20 of us( boys and girls) went to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and stayed at an all inclusive resort for a week. Our chaperones were some young coaches from our school.

I don't think I want my sons going that route now.

Theres not a single place in Mexico that an American should go to. Mexico is a third world narco state. Americans arent going to be safe Anywhere.

Who paid for them to go down there? Stupid all around. My sympathy is limited.

Having $1000 to go on vacation is a bit different than having $10,000 to give to a shady hospital. You realize that right?

For some reason, people think we live in a consequence free society.

That's not the way reality works. You take risks, sometimes you lose.

So you think being drugged and blackmailed by a hospital is good consequence for simply going on vacation?

Between the water, the cartel, and criminal level corruption at every level of government from meter maid to president, I have no idea why anybody would ever visit Mexico at this point.

Sure, everything will probably be fine. But nobody is ever surprised when shite goes south.

Here's my easy guide to avoiding danger in Mexico. I just ask myself:

1. Is it in Mexico?
If the answer is YES, then DO NOT GO.
If the answer is NO, then go.

That's about it. That's really you have to do.

I know in Negril,a lot of those resorts have docs on staff. But the government will not put up with fricking with the tourists. Tourists are the money. Don't frick with the money

Taking a vacation in Mexico means you should expect to get poisoned and then shook down by a hospital?

Did you expect anything else from the OT lol

As someone who is keenly aware of some things going-on south of our border these days, because of friends now working security details down there, things that you'll never see on the news or read about on any outlet's news portal, horrific things ..... I could not agree more.

But that's okay. Give it time. It's coming here.

China is working closely with the Cartels and the Iranians .... it is coming and it's too late to stop it. They're already here.

Why serve yourself up to them by going there?

I’ve been to the Cancun area 4-5 in the last 7 or so years and have never had a problem. The key is I always book a 5 star resort and go directly in a private transfer to the resort and then I don’t leave. I wouldn’t rent a car or go exploring on my own anywhere near that area. And also have never needed any kind of medical care luckily.

A high end resort doesn’t want any problems because bad reviews will affect their bottomline. If you are staying at a crappy place, expect shitty amenities/alcohol/food.

I'm the exact opposite. Rent a car and don't stay in a resort. Stay in a small town like Puerto Morelos, rent a house on the beach, shop at the local fish and farmer's markets, dine out at nicer places owned by expats, drive out to little known cenotes, see some cool Mayan shite, etc.

Be smart about it, have traveler's insurance, and know what you're getting in to, but don't be scared to live a little.

From the article "the college students have declined to reveal the names of the hotel or the hospital fearing for their safety"

Scared of what? Sandals Resort sending a hit squad to Dallas? And if they are so damn scared, why post a photo of the resort pool bar, give an interview to the Daily Mail and claim the unnamed hospital wasn't treating them (while also saying they were given a sedative and were intubated), and then start a GoFundMe... all of which garners even more attention.
