I have been to Minneapolis in the dead of winter on a number of occasions, and I have never been colder than Chicago. That wind is absolutely brutal

Side note, Chicago isn’t really that windy

quote:

While Chicago is widely known as the "Windy City", it is not the windiest city in the United States. Some of the windier cities recorded by the NOAA/NCDC are Dodge City, KS at 13.9 mph (22.3 km/h),[2]Amarillo, Texas at 13.5 mph (21.7 km/h),[2] and Lubbock, Texas at 12.4 mph (20 km/h).[3] Chicago is not significantly windier than any other U.S. city. For example, the average annual wind speed of Chicago is 10.3 mph (16.6 km/h); Boston: 12.4 mph (20.0 km/h); Central Park, New York City: 9.3 mph (15.0 km/h); and Los Angeles: 7.5 mph (12.1 km/h).[4]

To be fair, all those skyscrapers can create some nasty wind tunnels. I walked right by the Sears/Willis tower every day for ten years and it was BRUTAL some days. Get to the next block and the wind was gone. Walking across the river could be bad too.

Isn’t it going to be in the negative teens in a few days? I thought 13 was bad back in December

High of -9 projected for next Wednesday.

I'm guessing "Mr Michigan Fan" didn't actually go to Michigan...like the vast majority of their fanbase.

Not sure if you get the Tim Allen Pure Michigan commercials where you live, but if you do, this one is great: Pure Michigan Walmart Wolverine

I’m in Chicago. I’m a little worried that I don’t have enough cold weather gear for next week.

I will definitely be taking a cab or uber. Not waiting on an L platform in -10 degree weather.

Granted, I've only been to Chicago once and we stayed right off the magnificent mile. The wind that weekend was absolutely brutal and the coldest I have ever experienced.

How much is the electric, gas, whatever bill for heating per month? I know my gas bill can get around $100-$150 a month at the max, but it ain't ever cold like that. Seems like those guys up north would need a 2nd mortgage for the heating bills.

$350

I mean is it any different than running the AC in the summer in the south?

Actually yes. Heating in the north is a lot more expensive and uses a lot more energy than cooling in the south.

Also, you'll die without heat. No A/C might be miserable, but you probably wouldn't die.

Yep, if the South would have won the war, we could have let Canada have everything north of the Mason Dixon line!
