Buy all the materials yourself, buy compressor and nail gun. Not a hard job at all. After buying everything, you’ll still save a bunch of money. A buddy and I did about, 60 ft. In less than two days. Demo and rebuild. All post were still good.

The usual bullshite reason to get upfront payment is to buy materials
Unless you're using a shady "contractor", this is not a bullshite reason. Any licensed and bonded contractor will ask for a deposit from an unknown customer.
I have an open book policy with my customer. I also let them know that I will only use preferred vendors. I let them see my quantities, my mark up for insurance coverages and the extra items that I don't buy from my vendors because I already have them in my backstop.
I cannot and will not install some shitty materials because you got a better deal finding a bunk of lumber (or fence slats in this instance) on Facebook or Craigslist.
Y'all must have some shitty contractors and an extremely incompetent Contractor's Board in South Louisiana if so many of y'all have had bad experiences with "contractors"

Not true our HOA got together in pur last neighbor hiod and built a fence around the pool. They used screws. That fence looked like crap 3 years later. I used to listen to them bitcj abput how they took time to use screws and the boards still started warping etc. Nails are plenty good, faster and cheaper.

Should be a three rail system with the top and bottom rails somewhat near the free ends of the pickets. Ends of the pickets will warp otherwise.

Do it yourself. It’s not that hard. Contractors today are absolutely worthless.

Be sure to go with chain link. It's classier.

My experience is different. I did mine in 2017 and not a single warping shitty picket.
In my previous house, the fence was already there before I moved in. At one point a bunch of pickets started warping and popping off, but only on one section. It was a big arse fence too, surrounding 2 acres. The boards popping off were installed with nails. The boards not popping off had screws.
Your mileage apparently varies, just offering my anecdotal experience on the matter.

I built my own fence on my new house myself with dad's help. We used screws. That was 2015 and no warping almost 10 yrs later.

It I recall, you should name the company as an additional insured on your policy or he should name you, I can’t recall. Ask your agent. Him being licensed and insured doesn’t protect you if he’s injured on your property, say he falls down. Adding as an additional insured is what folks who work in insurance that I know do.

Why not do it yourself? It’s not rocket science baw.
Because that’s not what he asked.
He asked for advice in dealing with a contractor, but some people cannot help themselves from giving unsolicited advice, or answers to questions that were never asked.
Q: I’m taking the wife to “insert name of restaurant” and wanted some reviews.
A: 40 posts of different restaurants to go to instead and 10 posts of just stay home and cook your own meal.
Same with home projects, vacations, etc.
The dude is not building his own fence. If you don’t have any answers to his questions, then stay out of it.

Just use a reputable fencing company. We had to put a vinyl fence up per HOA guidelines, cost 5k. Half upon contract signing and half after completion. They do almost all the fences in our neighborhood so no worry about them bailing.

buy materials. Tell him to give you a list of what he will need and that you will buy it using your credit card (easy to return and/or cancel) and have it delivered to your house the day before he plans on arriving to do the installation.
Plan on having a lot on contractors turning down your business.
One of the ways they make money is up charging the materials.

Make sure you/they call 311 to mark all buried utilities BEFORE they start. Guy 2 doors down didn’t call and the jackleg he hired to do the work hit a fiber cable - I think he’s still in litigation over that one.

Probably one of the posts on this site that just get me irrationally angry. Its on the food board nonstop.
Op-Can anyone suggest a steak house for our anniversary? Thank you.
Douche #1-Just cook a steak at home yourself. I make better steaks than any restaurant ive ever been to.
Douche #2-I would go to the Italian place on Main Street and get some pasta.
Paul Allen-Im retarded

Owned/operated a fence biz for 20 years. Asked for and received 50% deposit on all jobs. Worked almost exclusively off of word of mouth advertising though, so my clients came through referrals from someone they knew, which helped with trust concerns.
Also exclusively used nails on wood fence, but they were ACQ "dipped" so they wouldn't "bleed" (black stain flowing down) and were ring-shanked, to hold more like a screw. You could also ask for several references and addresses to drive by.

This.
Neighbor replaced a run of fence last year, he hired someone who didn’t call 311. Just missed underground utilities with the auger. Crisis averted but it was real close.
