Focusing on the past is not useful at all. At the current moment he has 2 choices: break up, or get married, have kids and potentially have a bad marriage/divorce.

why does everyone assume divorce? Maybe he will realize "hey, I've got a great woman here. I can't believe that one time I was going to break it off"

He'll realize it five years from now when he's watching porn and she's raising his family with one of his friends.

now you've finally gotten the balls to openly admit it. Hopefully things work out the best for both of you, I really mean it, but what you did by dragging her along for this amount of time is simply shitty.

No doubt I am no saint in this.

But there are things you don't know but you are acting like you do know. This will be rough tonight, but it won't be coming out of the blue.

I'm not posting for a while now. I may be back later.

Glad you know that I didn't allow her to move into my apartment.

Not sure how after 10 years, this wasn't a clue to either of you that something wasn't right.
Honestly, there had to be signs before the engagement that something was wrong, because it took you what, 8 years to pop the question?

At this point, she is partly to blame too IMO if she has never seen the signs, or stayed that long with no kind of real commitment.

Nah. With my two girlfriends, I was very honest with both of them that I had no intention of getting married to them, but that we could have fun in the meantime. One I left on bad, and the other on good terms. I just don't understand when people can't be this open about it, and dishonestly dragging someone along pisses me off.

For the record, you are right to not marry someone you care so little for

No offense but I won't be replying to you anymore. There is no point, you just don't get it.

Lol. A gentlemen would have legal counsel and proper advice.

Yeah, a gentleman gets legal counsel over a ring that's probably worth less than $5K after a lengthy engagement.

It took this guy 9 years to propose though. He doesn't know what exactly he wants. She'll move on and be just fine in time. This guy will never find another chick that allows herself to be strung along for so long. And hopefully any other chick in his future will hear "me and my ex were together for 9 years until I proposed" on one of their dates and will run like the wind

Yea, done responding to you. You've made numerous sweeping claims based upon absolutely nothing but your own very obvious personal issues. You've got it all figured out and I'm fine leaving you feeling that way.

You proposed to her. It's the only logical conclusion.

I'm not offended. Like I said we are judging this only on what you've said and hinted at. And those things make it look like you don't care for her that much.
But hey life is complicated. I hope she doesn't care anymore for you than you do for her, however much that is.

Gifts given in anticipation of marriage belong to the recipient, the ring is hers.
