re: I'm a gun owner - is it really that bad to make a gun registry and require mental screens?

The problem with both is they are easy to politically weaponize to prevent lawful gun ownership.

Registry, all well and good til lack of appropriations and bureaucratic red tape make getting registered a long drawn out practical impossibility. There is a reason background checks have a time limit.

Mental checks, as stated by other, can easily be manipulated. There is a huge amount of progressives who think people are mentally unwell for even wanting to own a firearm.

Just inventory not limit...and that's in a perfect world, not the shitshow we currently reside in.

After the last two years, I can’t believe anyone that thinks giving government that kind of power is a good idea.

Not to mention, it would probably have a negligible effect if any at all.

So you want the feds to be allowed to come to your house and inventory your weapons and also perform random checks on that inventory then lock you up or take your house if anything is off year to year?

The ATF already does this to gun dealers FYI. Couldn't imagine the risk of allowing that shitshow of an agency to become gods over the general public.

Looks like he could purchase privately in Texas, but not through a FFL.

Shall not be infringed

As for a "mental health" registry... you want people to not seek help that's how to do it.

I was a dues paying member of NRA for decades, until they started supporting armor piecing bullets, laws allowing guns on elementary school and high school campus, and handguns that prevented fingerprints, etc. They made it impossible to support law enforcement and the NRA at same time as the former member cop giving me a warning on speeding one day and my buddy the DA explained to me. It’s was obvious they were just a puppet of the manufacturers.

You can’t put genie back in the bottle, is too late. i am about to have to hire armed security for my daughter to go to college, in ten years, private armed security will be larger force than the military

you morons are ok with requiring a license to drive but not own a deadly weapon.

you only need a license to drive on public roadways FYI.

any one of any age can drive any type of vehicle they legally own around their own land.

even so, how many people drive around with no license, suspended license, expired registration, no registration, etc? again, the rules and law aren’t the problem, there is no strict enforcement now.

the only way to stop these deranged shooters is:

1) someone, literally anyone in their lives raise the flag and someone take action (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, friends, friends parents, social media friends, etc). It’s never completely random, instead it’s aided or red flags aren’t taken seriously

2) armed guards within school who can be a failsafe and stop a threat as quick as possible

-let any teacher who wants to get trained and carry a firearm in school do so

-instead of sending $40 billion to Ukrain, allow a budget for off duty cops and retired military to provide security at schools

you can’t legislate immorality away, but you can try and stop it as quick as possible. this is the type of “common sense” we need. instead we get stupid shite like “Gun Free Zone” signs and 1st graders getting suspended for making a “gun” out of a pop tart

Wouldn't it make a lot more sense to use that mental screening to identify mentally ill people and incarcerate them? I mean, if you are deemed too crazy to be trusted with a gun because you may use it in an act of violence, are you not crazy enough to be placed in a mental institution?

Who will do this. MENTAL HEALTH REFORM is needed. You can’t tell people you are suicidal and get an impatient psych bed without waiting for DAYS. And that is with insurance.

There aren’t the resources to care for the mentally I’ll we already have.

Guns are simple. Easy to pass a meaningless law. Much easier than sweeping mental health reform.
