If you're a school teacher or work in a school, how many weeks do you have until summer?

This is bait for teacher haters.

I don't hate teachers, but if you get 25+% of the year off, don't complain about your pay compared to the rest of us who work all year.

It's like they hate school more than the kids.

Difference is the kids have to be there. The teachers chose to go that route

Teachers are paid pretty well considering the time off. Their benefits are (or at least used to be) really solid as well.

I don't think I have the patience to do what they do.

Seriously, they get paid very well for the amount of time they work. They can take a summer job if they want more money

A) I've never complained about my pay. I knew what I was getting when I chose this career, including the time off.

B) You don't fricking work all year. I'm pretty sure that you knew what you were getting when you chose your career, as well.

C) Fellow teachers, please stop starting these types of threads on the OT. More than half of the posters here hate us, as far as I can tell. These types of threads don't improve that situation.

My mom did this. She also had a part time job and worked some week nights and weekends during the school year

If I got the entire summer off, I'd find a temp job at a national park every year. It'd be awesome.

I don't get how some of these teachers just sit on their arse the entire summer. I'd go crazy.

My My, testy aren't we?

No shite. No one works "all year" with no vacation, but don't sit there and pretend like your 16-18 weeks off and my 5-6 are equal, especially when you get 10 off in a row.

They don't get 25% of the year off.

June is usually free from school, agree.

July they start having meetings and these stupid conferences

August, well half it, is spent preparing your classroom and finishing up the meetings.

Lets not forget the fact that they have a small hour of lesson planning (which is also their lunch), and they spend their free time outside of school (or past 3pm) grading, lesson planning, and preparing for the next day.

I was under the impression that teachers had it made, until I started dating one. That job is torture on all of the things above. I'm not going to even jump into the torture that is teaching the kids of today's youth in public school systems.

Date one. I wouldn't teach for all the money in the world. That shite is so damn depressing.

You're right. They get more. 25% of 52 is only 13 weeks. They get 16+.

God Forbid once a week they have to do something for their career

Ok so part time work? I have seen it. Couple hours a day in the 2 weeks leading up to school. NBD

Let's say they work 7-4 straight. That is 9 hours. Most professional level jobs that make a good salary do this and more. 50-60 hours is not uncommon. So 10-12 hours a day.

Sounds like poor career choices to me. My wife was a teacher. She quit and now works a normal job with normal professional level hours and is happier than she ever was before.

I do not hate teachers. I just don't have any sympathy for them when they get so much time off. It might be hard and it sucks, but the reward is the time off.
