re: If you're a school teacher or work in a school, how many weeks do you have until summer?

My wife teaches at an online school and doesn't start her break until June 9. Her students finish this week or next I think. I guess she can't complain though because she gets to work from home 2-3 days per week.

but don't sit there and pretend like your 16-18 weeks off and my 5-6 are equal, especially when you get 10 off in a row.
What district does this? I need to transfer there.

What's funny to me is how many people bitch about K12 teachers getting 8 weeks of summer vacation but rarely say anything about college professors.
Higher ed folks are pretty much done at this point and will go back to work in the fall after K12 does.
And there's no requirement for teaching summer courses unless they want the extra money.
Some might say summer is when research gets done, but I don't know any that need that much time to get something ready for publication. Especially after getting tenure.

It's because you never see a college professor bitching about pay

I don't hate teachers, but if you get 25+% of the year off, don't complain about your pay compared to the rest of us who work all year.
I hear this all the time but I don't see it. Where are the teachers complaining about their salary? I am a teacher and I get paid quite well considering the amount of days I have to work. I certainly don't make six figures but if that was important to me then I would switch careers. None of the teachers I know complain about the money. They complain about the kids or the work outside of school but never the money, we all know what we are getting paid going in.

Thank you for being a rational human being

This is what I said before you called me testy.

Sure, but then you said

B) You don't fricking work all year.
So I knew you were not being realistic. You had to resort to this retort.

Which you admitted to. Sounds like you were the one who wasn't being realistic.

Sound the alarm! I admitted to not working 100% of the year, as in every weekday, ever? Holy shite! I am such a liar!
I did not think I needed to explain the fact that I do in fact get some vacation, yet my company does not stop doing business for an entire portion of the year, but there ya go.

Same here

C) Fellow teachers, please stop starting these types of threads on the OT. More than half of the posters here hate us, as far as I can tell. These types of threads don't improve that situation.
The haters can eat a fat dick. Cmon May 26

Most teachers work 50% of the year. I work five hours a day for about 180 days a year.
As for summer, we have a short summer here. 6-7 weeks but we take off 6 school days for thanksgiving and 12-14 school days for Christmas. Getting our 180 days means we stay in until early June and go back early August.

I work 55+ hours a week. Most professionals I know work 55+ hours. Lots work more, and they don't get 16+ weeks off per year.
I know plenty teachers. None work 55-60 hours a week.
Coaches do, but they generally get paid more to compensate.
I am not bashing teachers. I understand it is a hard job. It is not one I would ever do, but I do not stand by and just agree that they are overworked, underpaid heroes when they get more time off every year than most people with regular joe jobs get in 3.
Typical teacher defensiveness however means I am an a-hole for pointing it out, when I am being logical.
If you make $43k a year as a teacher, you would be paid roughly $55k a year if you worked all year, but you don't.
It isn't personal, and that statement doesn't diminish what teachers do. It just gets on my nerves when I hear a teacher pining for that summertime break, then get all preachy about how they deserve it when I point out that most professions with similar educational standards don't even come close to the same vacation time.

Ok, you got us there. Only 49-50 weeks a year

Kids finish on May 24th
I have to report May 25-31 (off the 29th)
I will be attending the 99U Conference in NY from June 7-10, IEI in SC from June 18-23, & GACTE in GA July 8-12, then I report back to school on July 24 with kids first day back on friday July 28. That's 11 days of work during the summer out of 37, not bad! I'm not complaining or looking for sympathy, I just want to put my situation in perspective.
The teachers that complain about pay are usually the teachers doing the least amount of work. In Georgia, pay is based on tenure & education. A teacher with a masters & a specialist degree or a PhD will make exponentially more than a teacher with an undergrad. It also helps to take a more active roll in the school. Teachers are paid a stipend for various areas of responsibility like being a department chair or a content lead etc...
I love my job, I love teaching, and I love my summer off!
