I just talked to a buddy had the exact same problem. He lives in a subdivision where the houses were all built together. He said half the neighborhood has the same problems.

Nothing says winter like shoveling snow out the attic

I almost had a heart attack at first glance going into the attic after reading this thread
You've had a roller coaster of emotions tonight. Feeling like you saved your house by brushing the potential ice dams off to having a scare like above.

About to go to bed, saw this post, went to check my attic. Looks like I'll be shoveling snow out of the attic first thing in the morning.

That’s an improperly built ridge vent, at least it would be up here in Massachusetts. Never had that issue with my ridge vent.

I have ridge vents. Afraid to check but here goes.

ETA: all good. Now just worried about ice dams.

I do have ridge vents, but I’m just going to live in denial right now.

I will say this, my roof has more snow on it than all of my neighbors.
Guess my attic insulation is good.

We have ridge vents, too
I haven't noticed any ceiling leakage damage
I'm suffering from a pinched nerve right now and can barely move
Is this something I should have someone check for us???
Never would have thought of this besides this thread

I said I wasn’t gonna look, but I did. No trace of snow or water in the attic. Hopefully that doesn’t change when it melts.

If you have someone capable that wouldn't mind checking, I for sure would ask them. All you have to do is get up in the attic and look for snow. If you have snow in there, then scoop it out or if possible and you have a shop vac you could vacuum it out.
