Desolate, meaning a reason someone doesn't want to live there? Why? Scarcity of goods, resources, essential living materials? You tell me.

I know what desolate means, I'm asking you why are you under the assumption that low population islands = desolate.

quote:

I have decades of knowledge in plant and soil systems, and I can tell you this, I'd much rather be apart of a huge area of land, with different soil and climate types, than be in a specific locale with limitations.

How are you going to control a huge area of land when there will be countless roaming gangs and thieves looking to kill you and take your shite?

The more people there are around you, the worse the effects anarchy will be on you. Don't bother pointing out rural areas with very low people per square mile, America has well over 300 million people. The populations within the big cities will flee. There isn't much stopping people from several states over from being in your backyard. An island offers a much better buffer.

I took that pic checking my king crab pots

He have no road connections and a 1500 sq mile ice sheet between us and the Canadian border, and incredible resources.

I would just stay here

That's a great idea, you'd be in a really great area. You could spend your 24hrs traveling out to buy whatever you felt you needed - Water filters, guns and ammo, more traps, fishing poles/line/lures, gasoline, whatever... Then just head back and hunker down.

Probably would need at least enough supplies for about a month

2 people would need ~60 gallons of potable water to survive a month. Food - you would need, say, 70000 calories, minimum, and you'd be just above starvation level for 2 adults - ideally, 200000 calories. So, a 55 gallon drum of water, an additional 5 gallon jerry can of water, and between 18 and 60 of the lifeboat ration packs (the 3600 calorie kits - if you go with the 2000 calorie kits, you'll need closer to 35 to 100).

Then I would start planning on how to form my own army.

What would that include? Building a quick and dirty amphitheater with a roll on ramp for the podium?

By the exact definition, mostly.

You're acting like an an area you can access, currently without a doomsday scenario, would have the same ease of access during a doomsday scenario. 'Oh hey, I'll just boat on over to the Caribbean and it'll be no big deal.'

You're silly.

That's what we do locally. SHTF scenario isn't going to make the distance any further.

I don't need a huge area of land. I said, I'd rather options of huge areas of land.

quote:

And still, more options for whatever I please than a fricking isolated place.

When is the last time, in the history of everything, that you've read a prosperous non fictional tale of someone surviving isolated?

Without an absolute lean back? If you REALLY need something, in a SHTF scenario, you're fricked.

I'm saying there are more options, for everything, in a larger area.

Anyone arguing this is crazy.

24 hours and you start planning on forming your own army and such?

Too late for all that, lad.

Absolutely. All the food you need. It's an archipelago with thousands of islands and mainland close by.

I understand the geographics of Alaska, quite well.

Do you get fresh fruits and vegetables? Could it sustain the demand without importation?
