"It was the custom at that time, for some occult reason, to call football teams by the names of vicious animals; the Yale Bulldogs and the Princeton Tigers, for example. This is still the vogue. It struck me that purple and gold looked Tigerish enough and I suggested that we choose “Louisiana Tigers,” all in conference with the boys"

It is indeed a coincidence. He picked it for this reason, they threw in the civil war aspect after the fact

I'd go with the Louisiana State Nutria.

Why'd you leave out the rest of that paragraph?

"It was the custom at that time, for some occult reason, to call football teams by the names of vicious animals; the Yale Bulldogs and the Princeton Tigers, for example. This is still the vogue. It struck me that purple and gold looked Tigerish enough and I suggested that we choose “Louisiana Tigers,” all in conference with the boys. The Louisiana Tigers had represented the state in Civil War and had been known for their hard fighting. This name was applied collectively to the New Orleans Zouaves, the Donaldsonville Cannoniers, and to a number of other Louisiana companies sent to Virginia, who seemed to have the faculty of getting into the hardest part of the fighting and staying there, most of them permanently. One company I knew of went in 200 strong; only 28 returned and many of these were wounded."

I just cut was was needed. Someone could read the second part and use it to say that it was chosen due to the civil war, when that was not what he said. He chose the name due to purple and gold stripes looking like a tiger and it happened to fit into the civil war tiger narrative after the fact.

Do you guys not remember the petition to do away with the tiger name because it was named after the civil war soldiers? That quote is what shut them up.

If you don't think that shite can happen, drive down to Lee Circle

Yes, the tiger would not advance very far in a real life battle of mascots.

Green wave would drown the tigers
Sun Devils would burn them
Titans would crush them
Any man mascot with a gun could shoot them.

Need to be some kind of mythical creature

I agree, a tiger is about the most generic mascot there is. It's like, "Oh, we can't think of anything more creative; let's just use a tiger." What does a tiger have to do with Louisiana? Nothing. Should've been the dragonflies, mosquitoes, crawfish, corrupt politicians...
