You may dislike Berkeley because of perceived politics (which is more of a reflection of the city than the campus), but the reason people from Berkeley have massive chips on their shoulders is because of this perception that Stanford is a West Coast Ivy, and Cal never enters most people's minds when they think of the best of the best. The reality is, private schools coddle their students (relatively speaking) because these future alumni are what pad their endowment. Public universities are dog-eat-dog, and places like Cal will chew you up and spit you out (which for me is a point in favor of the privates ).

Cal Berkeley was my first thought when I saw this thread. Would gladly send my kids there.

Depends on how smart they are. If they could survive the rigors probably MIT. I have a cousin there that got a full ride but she's struggling going from smartest kid in the school to average at best.

The Suicide rate among students at MIT is tragically very high.

With money being no object, I feel like Stanford would be an amazing school to go to. Great education, strong athletic programs in a big time conference, probably decent Greek life with all the money there, and lots of good looking Asian girls for my son and future doctors for my daughter. Also a very pretty campus and area of the country. Only issue is the political psychosis going on there right now.

So is Stanford if you make less than 125k. Competition to get in is probably about the same as one of the service academies

Harvard is similar, something like 70% of the students are on need based financial aid. 100% Harvard graduates leave debt free, if your kid can get in you really don't have to worry about paying for it.

That’s the case at most elite schools, and has been for quite some time

Southern Univ... If that doesn't inspire them to strive to excel so they don't end up at some 3rd WORLD college nothing will.

I’d like for my boy to go to Stanford. Will cost over 60k/yr though.
Factually correct as it is “over $60k” but pretty underestimated.

Try $74k per year for incoming Freshman (Class of ‘22).

Try living cheaply in Palo Alto too.

My uncle taught there for a couple of decades.

Just like Harvard and the other ivy leagues, few pay full price for Stanford, if your kid can get accepted there is a lot of need based aid available. Running some numbers on their financial aid calculator it looks like a family of for with a household adjusted gross income of $125,000, a average house and some savings, can get the out of pocket cost down to $15-20,000 per year.

As long as it's an accredited four-year university and isn't Ole Miss, I'm good with my kid's decision on the matter.

Stanford is one of the most inexpensive schools to attend in the USA.

ANy of the ivy leagues of course. Then on the cusp of ivys like Vandy and Stanford.

eta forgot MIT. I'd probably choose MIT over any Ivys.

Ivy is an athletic conference. Has nothing to with the whether the school is good or not. Multiple schools in the USA that are harder to get into and higher on the prestige scale.

I've sent 2 and I'm not prior enlisted. It was something THEY wanted to do. They say I hit the lottery, not having to pay tuition. Geaux Falcons! Your kid going to a military academy is the best education ever. The perfect mix of mind, body, spirit.
