It can be done but the state would have to give the college educated in this state a reason to stay. 30k social work jobs aren’t exactly going to keep our best and brightest here.

-Incentivize businesses to come here via tax breaks
-force oil companies to invest infrastructure here if they want to use our coast
-fix the education system (stop ignoring the real issues and throwing money at what isn’t the real problem)
-get tougher on crime & culcha in Nola. Clean up New Orleans and make it a place people want to live and visit.
-lower the sales tax & increase the property tax (won’t be popular but it’s what Texas does)
-diversify the economy beyond O&G (tech, marijuana, sex robots, fricking anything else)
-Increase wages to be competitive with cost of living
-Crack down on the fraud in government handouts.

I could go on and on. The state needs a savior. I hate seeing it ranked as the worst place to live but it is what it is. Hard to argue against that ranking...

TX is diversified, not reliant on oil.

Your list is decent but I oppose this one. I think a sales tax, gas tax and tolls are the only true fair taxes. Crack heads, drug dealers and illegals get to pay them too. I'd like to get rid of the income and property tax and just have a sales and gas tax.

I honestly can go back and forth on it. I see arguments for both. I just think it’s probably the best way to address the infrastructure and the litter. At least with higher property taxes, the residents of whichever municipality would have the ammunition to break out the pitchforks if their money isn’t being spent efficiently.

The system now allows for too much cover up, and we never know how much money is being allocated or where it’s going.

I just hate the fact that people that don't own property get to vote on how much the rest of us pay. Also, it means that you never truly own your home. At least with a sales tax you can somewhat control how much you are paying.

A gas tax and tolls are decent ways to fund the roads. The people using them are the primary people paying for them.

Property taxes. People that don't own property still get to vote on the proposals when they are on the ballot

I am a native of Louisiana living in Texas. I think a big part of it is a business friendly political climate. Also Texas has a history of independence and self reliance where Louisiana really doesn’t.

So, in your mind these people aren't having the tax passed on to them via rent?

Or you just think landlords are being awesome and absorbing the total cost?

They absolutely are but you also have people living off of the government paying little to no rent and voting on proposals like CATS.

And you have people who don't own businesses voting on business taxes.

People afraid to fly voting on airport taxes.

People without solar power voting on solar taxes.

You just don't want people, poorer than you, able to vote. You want to be the smallest pig sucking off the teat.

JOBS.

A ton of North Louisiana people move to Dallas, too. It's a four hour drive from the Monroe area on the I-20. I moved to Dallas in 1983, and stayed until 2011.

I pay a lot in and suck very little out. I can't even use the public schools despite having a school aged kid. I pay for other kids to go to school and mine to go to private.

It seems that we just don't agree here. I'm just saying that property taxes are bullshite. I'd rather pay a 20% sales tax to get rid of them and the state income tax.

You choose to. You still benefit from the school system, despite its failures. The guy repairing your road, taking your food order, cleaning your car, or policing your street may have very well gone to those public schools.

You have the luxury of spending more for a house, education, car. Doesn't mean you get excused from contributing to society for what you take from it just because you fail to see the direct connection.

Hope fully public schools will be a thing of the past soon. We spend far too much for mediocre results.

It has to do something with starting with a substandard product.

Merit based payments will result in many kids never having the chance at education.

The US in general has a huge underclass that votes their specific interests without understanding the "bigger picture"

It will be our undoing.

The simple answer is corruption and the lack of a diverse economy. La rodes or dies on the process of oil.

So was Texas. Till that big oil bubble burst that led to a concerted effort to diversify

LA got hit by the same bubble, and just bided their time till it came back and just started slurping on the teat.

Exactly. People that pay effectively a 0% tax rate will always vote for more government services because it has no impact on their wallet.
