Drought was a bitch, but people weren't exactly being good stewards of that land back in the day.

With modern corporate farming, this has only gotten worse.

We'd all be eating bugs and living in pods.

The pioneers that largely slaughtered the vast herds American bison that once roamed the majority of the Great Plains would be to blame. Bison are know to aerate the soil with their hooves and disperse native plant seeds.

Irrigation wells today would keep the crop failure from being that bad

What pioneers did the bison would be unforgivable if we put them through a modern day purity test.

But did lack of Bison cause a 3 year drought?

No, but it certainly made the effects worse.

as stated before: we know more about crop rotation and soil health so modern technology/ knowledge would prevent a “dust bowl “scale famine . We could grow most of our food indoors if we wanted to.

Hell, we grow plants in outdoor space now.

You are confusing my question about “root cause” with a “contributing factor”.

If not for the drought, the bison issue (horrible as it was) would not have been an issue.

If we (as a society) cared for the farmlands of America, we would reintroduce ruminants to the grasslands. Enact rotational grazing and stop the current farming practices that are contributing to the death of the once most fertile lands on Earth.

Our biggest export by tonnage in the US is topsoil. And it goes right off the Continental shelf into the Gulf.

The bison were a central part of the Great Plains ecosystem that were virtually wiped out.
Once we began clearing grassland for farms and towns. We depleted the soil of nutrients in about 5 years , then moved further west. No grass or crops left to keep dirt in place in tornado alley means = dust bowl.
Inconsistent Rainfall, poor to little irrigation infrastructure at the time,
Poor soil science knowledge, no natural source to re-aerate soil and disperse large amount of seeds: all contributed to the dust bowl.

Yes, I know birds and other animals can disperse seeds, but not on the scale the hundreds of thousands of bison did for the Great Plains.

While I applaud your enthusiasm to be good stewards of the earth, the rain came back. The bison did not.

Sometimes the climate just fluctuates. In fact, I will insist it has always fluctuated.

We'd definitely have to pay more taxes, because it's obviously caused by manmade pollution

“Grapes of wrath” by Steinbeck is another good read related to the dust bowl.

It’ll just be the grapes of wrath all over again. We will persevere.
