Why's that?

Roman armies are trained to fight in those formations with those weapons from day 1. Modern military would have zero idea how to operate against those formations if using the same weapons and armor.

I misread the question. I thought it was with AR-15s etc. not pike and shield.

Romans would win, with a little training I think the SEALs could do alright.

Have we ignored the fact that as soon as Roman soldiers see their buddies fall with only the sounds of "pops" in the distance, they would shite their pants and run away. Absolutely no way they stick around after the first 100 guys died. They would turn and run.

Pizarro had fewer than 200 men- less than 100 on horses- and defeated 80,000 Incan warriors.

10 well armed seals could take a legion.

2 guys... One to drive the armored truck with the minigun mounted on it, and one to shoot. 100,000 rounds just to be safe.

Wouldn't take much by today's standards. In all honesty the shooter/shooters would get sick of humans go to slaughter, and stop killing them. That's cheapest. Otherwise oneSpecter gunship would do the job in a matter of minutes. Seconds if the legion did not break ranks.

Pizarro had roughly 30,000 men and they were unarmed...

+ from reading Guns, Germs, and Steel. Pizarro overwhelmed them with his guns. They had never heard anything like that and the Incans wound up running around like chickens with their heads cut off while the Spanish killed them.

The only thing close would be the army green berets/ USMC recon. And as much as it pains me to say.... Seals are the best.

Green Berets are by far the most skilled and toughest with the most difficult mission in the armed forces today. Two Green Berets could have trained the enemies of Rome to annihilate the legions and be back in time for supper

No folks! No air support or tanks or Abrams. I recommended SUVs strictly for mobility. Stick with the plan!

Why's that?

Romans would be full of filthy diseases and infect the seals like crazy. They are also very brutal and graphic fighters, skilled with swords, arrows & bows, and spears. They also had flaming fireballs they would loft at the enemy.

I wonder if one aircraft carrier would be enough to defeat the roman empire? Maybe add an iowa class battleship too for good measure?

Seals are a scalpel and that isn't what you would use for 10,000 men. You need some armor with weapons that have an area of effect.

I believe you would be better off with infantry than you would with seals as they are trained in large scale operations. I would say 500 would be a safe number.

If you kept them at a distance then yes. A lot of these different units have specific purposes. For example, need to take an airport? Call in the Rangers.

Exactly. Why in the hell are most of you sending in the infantry?

EDIT: Guess I should read the OP more thoroughly. Probably still not many due to the aforementioned "magical scary boom stick" factor.
