I think there's a movie in the works based on this sort of scenario. An "AskReddit" post a while back asked how a modern MEU would perform against the Roman army. Some guy responded with a fictional answer, and then a movie studio picked it up.
Reddit Thread
Rome, Sweet Rome.

Interesting thanks for posting.
Reading the plot though it seems pretty stupid. Yeah when 330000 were taking on 2200 if the 2200 run out of supplies etc they will be fricked.
I find it hard to believe though that after 100k or so people run to their deaths the other 220k are going to be that gung ho.

Small company should be able to handle 10,000 men armed with sword and shield.

Actually now that I think about it, their catapults, battering rams, flaming arrows, and dead bodies could probably disable a tank.
Probably take a small battalion of guys to take down 10,000 dudes. 300 soldiers, multiple snipers, a tank or two, 4 Humvees, some Javelins?

Are you implying some group is better? If so, who?

Further down someone makes the argument that the MEU should head straight for Rome and conquer it before supplies run low, then integrate into Roman Society as the baddest MFers around.

How would the Romans attack the tank? Couldn't the tank just shoot it from a distance and/or run the Romans over?

A better question might be how would 10,000 Seals (or whatever the top group is) fare against that Roman Legion if they were armed with the same arms the Romans used?
The modern guys would have the advantage in nutrition/fitness I would think and probably training but the Romans would have experience with the weapons and related tactics.

Would have to catapult something huge and on fire on top of it. No way they're piercing the armor.

Indiana Jones took a tank down with a pen, a rock, a whip, and a horse FWIW.

Romans would destroy the Seals. Wouldn't be close.

He also survived a nuclear explosion by getting inside a refrigerator. Like cats in It's Always Sunny, Indiana does not abide by the laws of physics.

Not sure I agree either. The Roman army was based on structure and large scale tactics.
What I mean is as a unit the Roman army was bad arse because they could turtle and launch their artillery and flank and such.
The Seals, I would have to believe, are individually more bad arse than the majority of the the Roman Army. Therefore, I believe the Seals would beat them if similar numbers and weapons.

Full auto is what 900 rounds per minute. Distance? Figure 20% hit rate at full auto (wild guess). Need 50,000 rounds.
Distance at 4 mph marching speed gives you time.
Time at 20% hit rate per minute gives you number of men needed to unload enough rounds before they hit distance 0.
There ya go. You're welcome.

What happens if they turtle all the way? (assuming the shields could stop a bullet)
