He’s the mayor and it was a huge local story. He had to say something, and I don’t really think it was wrong. Maybe ICE knew fairly quickly he was illegal and didn’t share that. But without the facts, the appearance was they had a high school kid detained for days before verifying his status one way or the other.
Two things can be true, this particular kid shouldn’t have done what he did, but federal government officials shouldn’t just be scooping people up and figuring it out later.
I still do have some empathy for the kid, he was 12 or 13 when he came here, what’s he supposed to do, just pack his shite and go back? He should have never been here and put in that situation, but blaming a teenager isn’t going to accomplish anything. Blame the “adults” who allowed him to get here in the first place.

This is from google and my general experience relates to this. I run a business that does a small portion of business with the hospitality business that is known to hire a lot of hispanics.
From the ones that I have talked to, the process to work officially takes a long time and is not easy. Many of them refuse to follow the rules for one reason or another, mostly the paperwork and effort. People act like its hard, its really not. Its just not easy.
But the fact is that most "asylum" seekers are working illegally because they aren't putting in the effort to work legally.
Can Asylum Seekers Work in the US?
Asylum seekers in the United States can work legally, but they must follow specific rules and wait for the work permit. The asylum system has seen significant changes, with the number of asylum grants more than doubling in recent years. As of September 2025, the backlog of cases has reduced, but asylum cases still face an estimated wait time of 4.3 years.

It’s a fair point though that these “stories” always seem to pop up, community outrage occurs, and then the truth finally comes out. It often doesn’t even matter what the truth is to that community.
