I always question this data. Sure places like NYC were demonstrably more dangerous in the 70s and 80s. But we know now that crime statistics are manipulated in the current era - the validity of FBI data is questionable resulting from underreporting due to political manipulation. I imagine nationwide data from the past is likewise unreliable.

Baton Rouge was never more dangerous than 2021 yet a lot of people harp about the 90s.

The 90s was all fun and games until y2k hype. Then it was the end of times all over again.
I wouldn’t say it was all hype. It’s just a real problem was recognized and lots and lots of people spent a lot of hours fixing it and were successful in doing so, so crisis averted

There was 40's nostalgia in the '70s. The Andrews
Sisters even had a Broadway show.
Those 20 yo's were turning 50...
Our grandparents in the 60's were holding on to our last traditional values while the 70's went long hair and rock and roll.
Shame that Rock died to rap...

turned 10 at the start of the 80s and was on the cusp of 20 at the end of if the 80s. I got to live the 80s as both a kid, a teen, and a young adult. It was awesome.
I was cursed with this same affliction and everyday I thank the Lord.

What's interesting is that it's not just confined to the United States.
Crime rose in the 60s, 70s, and 80s and peaked in the early 90s and then declined in many countries worldwide.
No one knows why.
There are several theories about it.

Yes. I was born in ‘73. Little kid in the 70’s,
Formative and teenage years in the 80’s, College and young adult in the 90’s. Not best but really great music, best movies and fashion, and absolute best sports.

The late 70s and early 80s were a great time to grow up. Parents badsically didn't give a frick what you did as long as you were home for dinner or by dark.
We were free range kids and took care of each other.

Growing up in the 80’s, early 90’s was amazing.

I grew up in the late 60s and 70s. I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world! I so wish I could go back! I wish the world could go back!

Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s must’ve been awful. How did those people survive without tracking their spouse’s and kids every movement of the day with Life360? What a bunch of maniacs.

I was HS in the 80’s & college in the 90’s. 80’s were better by far. We traded fun, glam bands like Poison and Crue for Nirvana and Pearl Jam. 90’s music was depressing and whiny. We went from neons and flash to dirty jeans and flannel. Unless you’re a lumberjack or country boy, you don’t need flannel in HS.

Yes. The years we maxed out with technology before social media was created was peak society.
Social media = downfall of the world

So why would they make it unreliable towards more violent crimes?

The post-Covid spike was real.
It's self-corrected nationally. There are some outliers, though, who haven't. I think BR is in that group.

Yeah, I enjoyed music in the 70s and the 80s because there was still a strong sense of showmanship.
Bands weren't just about their music, they had a whole persona and almost like a fantasy world that they represented.
Think about David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust, KISS, pretty much all Glam Rock, New Wave bands in the 80s, Ozzy Osbourne, even pop acts like Cindi Lauper or Culture Club.
Acts represented a whole culture, not just their record. If someone was wearing a Smiths T shirt in the 80s, you knew something about him, and you knew it was very different than if he was wearing a Motley Crue t shirt.
In the 90s it started to be a lot more common that you couldn't tell the roadies from the band. Nirvana had a culture, but it was recycled punk culture watered down. The 90s is when music started to fold back on itself IMO and less and less unique approaches were happening and more and more recycling started happening.

I was born in 78. Being a young kid in the 80s was awesome. We had the benefit of some technology, but it didn’t consume our lives. Some days we would play on the NES and some days I was riding the roads on my bicycle with my friends.
The 90s as a teen and college kid were great. We were wild but nothing crazy. We were very social. That is something I see kids really missing out on now.

Yes as a kid I took off with a shotgun early am with my brother & a friend. We walked for miles through the woods crossing multiple land owners properties with no issues/lease police. We would thumb a ride back to town and a farmer would typically pick us up. "Did you getum?" When we got trucks we had those 12's in the gun rack in the school parking lot.
