He was an Oscar-winning, A-list movie star in the late-30s before joining the Army Air Corps as a private in February 1941. He flew 20 combat missions over Germany as a pilot of a B-24 Liberator and rose to the rank of colonel before the end of the war. He returned to the states in the fall of 1945 and immediately starred in It's a Wonderful Life along with other such classics as Rear Window and The Spirit of St. Louis. He remained in the Air Force Reserves and retired a brigadier general in 1968.

Upon his death in 1997, he had accumulated 12 civilian and military medals, two Academy Awards, two Golden Globes, and numerous Lifetime Achievement awards from different institutes. As far as his acting style and persona went, Jimmy Stewart was the Tom Hanks of his day. He was a great actor, a great American, and a war hero.

I thought this was going to be about the late night comedian and I was coming in here to strongly disagree.

I don't watch much tv, obviously.

Your argument is hard to refute. Jimmy Stewart , in an era of legends, somehow dwarfed those around him because he exuded integrity . He was kind of the quintessential American ideal.

Glenn Ford was a Rear Admiral in the Navy Reserve.

ETA. Actually, he was a Captain in the Navy Reserve.

I beg to differ, Pilgrim. John Wayne is the GOAT

Though John Wayne was my favorite childhood actor,he makes a great argument for Jimmy Stewart.

Both were great in my eyes.

J Stewart deserves all of the accolades you can send his way. To compare Tom Hanks to Jimmy is not a good analogy. I don’t believe you meant to do that. Jimmy’s service record is the obvious difference. I don’t believe Jimmy would have been associating with the likes of Obama. Period. I do like Tom, but after that association I won’t pay to watch his movies. It’s the only avenue I have to voice my disagreement.

In Lee Corso's voice...

Not so fast.

Audie Murphy woulda kicked Jimmy's arse in battle and was equally as talented on screen and a songwriter.
