Williams received the highest civilian award that can be given, was arguably the greatest hitter of all time and flew 32 missions in the Korean War.
He was also a remarkable outdoorsman and had lines of sporting goodshat bore his name.
I guess it depends on the crowd you run with.

Nope. A buddy of mine’s grandfather was enlisted and in the USAA with him. Jimmy used to host parties for his unit when they were training in California. His grandfather said he and his Hollywood girlfriend at the time were as down to earth as could be.
And Jimmy was a cooze hound, too. Extra gold star for that.

I’m not denying his worth and fame. I guess I was looking at it from an international perspective based only on athletic achievements.
He was an outdoorsman for sure. Matt Batts told me the only other thing Williams obsessed over besides hitting was fishing.

My favorite Jimmy Stewart story concerned one of the bomber crews in his squadron who hadn't gotten paid, and the finance officer blew them off and told them to come back next week.
When told, Jimmy took his boys into the finance office and told the officer that the crew needed to be paid, not next week, but in the next thirty minutes. He added that if they were not paid, the squadron would have a new finance officer, because the current one would be in the infantry.

Audie Murphy is just a great American regardless of celebrity status. That is simply without question, as well as Alvin York. The reason I agree with Jimmy Stewart in celebrity is he gave up so much to do what was right at the time our country needed him and others the most, and continued to do so well after the war was over. I’d also like to say Bob Hope has done so much for the American soldier over the years, You have to tip your hat and then some. Guy was an Englishman who only became an American Citizen in 1920, and was truly as Great of an American as anyone.
