Not quite as old (upper 20s) but I can honestly say being tied down with a wife and kids would've stopped me from many experiences I've had in life.

My coworker went through a divorce last year in his early 40s. He's not a looker, but former engineer with GE/former patent attorney.
You shouldn't rule it out.

Nothing wrong with not being married and having no kids. I'm married without kids. I'm at peace that my family name ends with me. Sad, but at peace.
