As I read the thread I was on the side of the kid. Then I watched the video and the cops repeatedly told him to get out of the car. He didn't! That is not complying!

at what point would you stop feeling comfortable complying with the orders? how unreasonable does an officer have to get before you say no?

(honest question there)

Already sketchy and not upfront? Now you're just making excuses.

That you'd think to blame that guy and nothing on the cops is really telling. You can argue Patrick could have handled it better, I certainly won't disagree. But this is 100% on the cops, and it's pretty pathetic that he's getting charged with anything. The officers lied, he answered their question, they ignored him. Even if he could have handled it better, this is all on the officers for not properly ID'ing him, even after he said his name was something other than the guy they were looking for. I'd assume their should be discipline coming down for the cops, as I highly doubt they followed protocol not even attempting to ID who they're arresting.

This x100. If you think Patrick is to blame, then you are not looking at this without tons of bias. What do you think is going to happen if you walk up to an innocent man and treat him like that? Anyone would be hesitant if approached like that and you know it.

It is irrelevant that Patrick has been in trouble before, as he has rights just like everyone and deserves an explanation of what is going on before being fricking tased.

I usually side with the police on these since it seems that they get the short end of public opinion, but I have a hard time defending anyone who treats another citizen in this way.

We will never get passed this shite if we don't look at facts first and try and understand all points of view before blindly defending what we want the story to be.

Hiding and escaping... from the passenger seat of a car with the door open.

OK

we should have EXTREMELY high expectations for the police to excel at handling the public

I agree. I've railed on in these threads how the cops have been all "tactical"-oriented over the past 20 or 30 years and have a full on, "us against them" mindset. Not every single cop or every single organization. But a lot of these kids hit the streets at 22, 25 or so and don't have a lot of experience dealing with different people in different situations. They might react differently than a 28, 30 or 35 year old who would be more contemplative. Because of career tracks, a lot of those guys who have developed skills on the street become detectives, sergeants, lieutenants, and that skillset is lost through promotion.

ETA: And another thing - a lot of departments start their rooks in jail. This is so they have them observed in a controlled environment. I understand that, but it also leads to this preconceived notion that everyone they deal with is a POS.

What happened in between was him asking to see the warrant and then telling someone to call his parole officer.

Nothing else?

Agreed. I've already said the cops didn't handle this well.

yeah, a law abiding citizen should comply with officer demands
I'm not convinced that someone should comply with a cop who is not abiding the law, to be honest.

Yes, that could be a very bad idea(I wouldn't do it personally but I get why others would) and result in bad things for the citizen, but that's on the cops who isn't abiding by the law and falsely arresting someone IMO.

the first thing he said was his name when they asked

he gave them his real name. All they had to do was verify that. No need to cuff someone first. Jesus.

Patrick is not Michael, so he's falsely arresting someone.
