quote:

24-year-old Patrick Mumford was sitting in his own car in February, 2016 when he was confronted by three Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Officers, who were serving a warrant for another man, Michael Clay.

The lead officer confronts Patrick but does not believe Patrick when he truthfully identifies himself to the officer, twice. Patrick rightfully asks the officers what is the matter and to see the arrest warrant they say they are serving.

Fearful and confused, Patrick retreats into the passenger seat of his car. Within 38 seconds of his initial introduction to the officers, the lead officer is ordering Patrick to be tased for non-compliance.

It takes a violent use of force for officers to realize what we already know: they have the wrong guy.

Rather than apologize, the officers rationalize and justify their actions to horrified neighbors and even Patrick's parents. These rationalizations include the repeated false statement that the officers asked Patrick for his ID.

Patrick is arrested for obstruction. As a non-violent drug offender serving in a first-offender probation program, a pending probation violation could cost him his job, his college education, and seven years in prison: all for sitting in his own car, minding his own business, and telling the truth.

I was waiting for this to show up here. Why didn't he just answer who he was instead of being immediately hostile to the police? And then he tries slamming the door? Just stupid.

Kid brought it on himself.

bring on the downvotes, but it's the truth.

god, you are incapable of taking these incidents case by case. If it were up to you, we'd live in a police state it seems. Kid asked to see the warrant which is completely within his rights.

No, I'm looking at this exact case. He did exactly what I said he did.

He did more than that, but OK.

He was confused as to why the cops walked up to him and just started asking his name and not telling him why

No you wouldn't. You'd have gotten your ID like a normal person, and not said "ummmmm......... Salmon?" when asked your name.

Alright this is bullshite

I don't like that he wasn't as cooperative, but these cops didn't even properly give him a chance to truly identify himself.

Why didn't they they at least ask him to get identification to prove who he was?

When he said he was Patrick they should have verified with him. He said he just saw his probation officer, why didn't they ask for his contact info.

They could have done a better job of identifying who he was. They did not even ask him for I.D. initially.

Thats fricked up - totally wrong on the cops and I usually side with the cops in these things. I mean he could have immediately said i'm Patrick so and so... but i can understand being like what the frick is going on having three cops on you.

And then once he said "I'm Patrick" the cops should have asked for his ID calmly and de-escalated the situation.

I don't understand what's so difficult about answering a question & doing what a cops says.

Not placing blame on either party, I have issues with how each handled the situation.
