AA works despite what some of these scumbags say not being in your shoes.

This describes me to a T. I really am glad you made this post. Even though I know I’m not the only one who has this issue it helps to see someone who literally had the same problem that I do now.

There’s a surprising amount of people on this board with years of sobriety and even more trying to get there (including myself). Just keep stacking the days and keeping yourself busy man

I'm not one to say that AA is the only way to stay sober, but if you have an hour and change to blow off - try a meeting. I don't do the ones at the churches, I usually go to whats called "Alano Clubs" or "Step Rooms", etc. They seem to have the more down to earth people that I can relate with. I went to one at a baptist church and when I told them some of the things I had done they were ready to condemn me to hell. The folks at the alano clubs were like "Hell yeah I did that too! Didja get arrested like I did?" Those old kooks love to talk about it and make jokes whereas a lot of the church-based ones have people in there that drank 1 beer in their teenage years and still feel guilt.

That’s the “promises” at work. It’s crazy how it works, I still have tons of amends I need to give but the sketchy ones never turn out like you expect.

Everyone knows an alcoholic has a drinking problem long before the actual alcoholic. Just the nature of it

I'd like to use it but I feel the stigma of going would be embarrassing and my family would worry about me. Both sides of my family are alcoholics so there's almost a shame in going. Like I would be a failure if I went because I couldn't hold my liquor or something.

Why would your family have to know?

I wasn't born with that off switch.

I've gotten that nonsense in daily life too - was at a casino playing poker and some dude was giving me shite for drinking water and sodas. I took his money though, it was all fun on my end.

You’re not the only one feels that way and that’s a shame. It really does work if you take it serious or at least for me did it for over a year

I wouldn't keep it from my wife and I'd run into the same problem with her family. They start drinking at 8 a.m. on vacations, if I said I wasn't drinking it would be a big topic of conversation. I quit drinking for three weeks once, we were at dinner with my in-laws and I mentioned it. They were asking me what's wrong and saying they just don't get it, why would I do that. I had to defend myself for NOT drinking.

For the first few months I used the "I'm on antibiotics" line.

Not sure if serious.

I took 30 days off recently to just make sure I could. Have to say it wasn't as hard as I thought it'd be. The IDEA of going to an event where I'd normally drink--and not drink--was worse than the actual reality of it.

For some reason I gave up on it about 45 days in. Probably shouldn't have. It's socially accepted poison, but poison all the same.

I like to hit those people with a line about how my heavy drinking used to end up in trap houses in the NOLA projects, just to make them feel uncomfortable

People that have never had addiction issues will never understand this. I've known plenty of people, including myself, where 1 meant at least 10.

I've been one of the few people I've known of that used to drink like this but don't anymore and can still have a drink. It took me years to be able to split a bottle of wine with my wife and not want to drink 3 more.

I never could drink socially like some people can - there was never such thing as going out for a couple of drinks. I'd play it off as drinks at dinner, but once I was on my way home I'd pick up a bottle and beers on my way home or I'd just go get shithoused at a bar on my way home.

I have a good friend that was doing the same thing. He’s about to be 90 days.

Congratulations
