I overfilled my generator and it cut itself off, am I screwed? ETA: working now

I was filling my generator up and didn’t turn it off. I usually regularly do this without issue. I didn’t pull the siphon out in time and it overflowed and then started sputtering and then stalled and cut itself off. Am I screwed or do I just have to wait a minute before cranking it back up? I don’t want to flood it and potentially ruin it. Any advice would be appreciate because it is hot AF Now.

Is generator code for something else?

Don’t ever fill while running. Great way for it to catch on fire. It not starting will be the least of your issues.

Well glad I know that now.

Ask your husband to do it next time - you're welcome.

It worked. You ever get stuck in China again I’ll personally fly you out.

I’ve never NOT turned off a generator while adding fuel. What’s the difference between a generator, lawnmower, go cart?

If it overflowed all over the air filter it just may not be able to get enough air. Give it some time for the gas to evaporate and it should start fine.

I always refill my generator while it’s running - and usually have a lit stogie at the same time.

Like any real American would.

You probably turn your car off while filling too ;)

A running generator makes enough high voltage electricity a few inches away from the gas cap to kill you.
I would have to run myself over with a lawn mower or get in my time machine and go back and tell 10 yr old me that yeah, my go-cart can EASILY clear that ravine for either one of those to kill me.

try a couple squirts of starter fluid to help it catch.

Hey, sometimes you have to breathe a little life into them… know what I’m saying?

quote:you can't ruin it for freaks sake. if it's flooded, worst case is take out the spark plug, dry it, stick it back it in and crank it. If you have a rope to pull, just pull it a bunch of times and the extra gas that flooded the spark plug will get sucked out.
I don’t want to flood it and potentially ruin it.

None. Equally dangerous. Pressure washer the same way.
