That’s why people who encouraged their children catching chickenpox through forced contact with others infected were stupid. Chicken pox manifests as shingles later in life.
Prior to the vaccine, only a very small portion of children made it out of their teen years without having chickenpox. So statistically it made sense for the kids to have it prior to their teen years and definitely becoming an adult because the initial infection causes worse symptoms the older one gets. While I never knew any parents to have pox parties by second grade pretty much everyone I knew had been infected just because it is extremely contagious. The vaccine which has been around 20 years or so changed that whole formula and it can be avoided now. A different world with a different cost-benefit analysis pre-vaccine. Anyone that has a pox party now is at minimum ignorant and possibly an idiot.

Agreed! The vaccine is so much safer than the alternative.

What does shingles feel like? How long does it last?
Posted on 9/6/22 at 1:50 am to Bayou Brat
It varies from nothingburger to irreversible scarring and complications.

Is it some sort of rash? Can it spread all over the body?

I had an outbreak along a nerve on my head. I felt like I had a migraine that I couldn't shake for a few days.

The real bitch is when you end up with ongoing pain from postherpetic neuralgia which gets more likely the older you are. My first wife's grandfather had it post shingles and his pain was debilitating and lasted for nearly 2 years before trailing off. He was in his middle 70s when shingles popped up.

Had it in '00. Under 40 at the time. Started as a pain in my back like a pulled muscle. Bottom of shoulder blade around to my chest. Hurt to take a deep breath and was achy for 5-6 weeks. Blisters left some scars and numb spots. It follows the nerve for the poster that asked if it was a rash.

I had it once in my 20s. Flared up immediately after taking the bar exam. Doc said the stress and piss poor eating during that period probably weakened my immune system causing shingles to appear

Nah

I had it at 39. Really sucked.

I had what they call a belt rash. It was like chickenpox but a little larger and along my waist on my back about belt level. It hurt like shite to sit down but was manageable if I stood. I got it the day before I started my first legal job. fricking miserable.

I had shingles at 13. I had a very mild case of chicken pox as a baby.
Posted on 9/6/22 at 6:23 am to BeepNode
I had it at 36 or 37. Very mild, just a small patch on my back. I have read that it has become more common in younger people of late (or since the introduction of the varicella vaccine).
Shingles on the rise in younger people.

He was “vaxxed” against a strain of covid that hasn’t been in circulation in about two years or so. Why is this supposed to be a “gotcha”? Good grief.

Me too - Had it on my rib cage on the right side, hurt like frick and I was on a camping/fishing trip. As a
youngun I thought it was poison ivy or oak or something, had these whelps come up following my rib cage around.
Went to the Dr when we got home and was diagnosed with shingles
I got vaccinated for it at Walmart recently while getting everything else, not sure if it ever comes back but I've seen old people get it in their eyes and stuff.

Im still pissed at my situation.
Got it in Jan 2020 at 39 on top of my right foot and Im a runner so i thought it was a fungal thing. Did the CVS virtual visit and doctor said the same thing and gave me a cream.
2 weeks later it looked the same and went to my GP. He said its Shingles and it was too late to give me meds because its like the Flu where you have to attack it early.
Now the top of my foot i can barely feel and the nerve is SUPER sensitive. Anytime i feel anxious my foot feels like its on fire.
Its been 2.5 years. Sucks
