Jamis Coda Comp.

Good components, steel frame for a smoother ride (carbon fork).

The Santa Cruz here is an excellent commuter bike AND you won't find a better value in a bike than this one.

The OP's going to ride it two miles a day. You and I have different definitions of value.

Four Grand? Where did you find one for that price? This is the cheapest I could find one.

Fairdale is a really good value in my opinion. Giant is always a good value as they are one of, if not the biggest manufacturer.

Bikes are like boats in that they can be specific to what you are using it to do. For commuting you should look at touring or commuter models which will usually have fenders.

Brands to look at: Fairdale, Salsa, Kona, Trek, Specialized, Surly.

Dang! I didn't realize that was the $9,499 Bronson.

I thought it was this one. Hightower LT

I have a Harley-Davidson V-Rod I’ll sell you. Imagine being able to get to work in a matter of a few seconds.

Since your distance is that short, what I’d do if I were you—and I’ve done this before—is go to a bike shop and buy the second least expensive bike in the store that’s big enough for you and doesn’t have a fixed gear. I bike a lot but I don’t know too much about what brands are the best, but Schwinn and Cannondale have always done the job for me.

Another thing, especially since this is for a work commute and not primarily for long distance—make sure you have fenders on both wheels. The street will be wet some days, and you don’t want a black streak up your back. If you pick a bike with no fenders, the shop should be able to install them for pretty cheap.

Just get a steel single speed bike.

Look at Tribe or State Bicycles.
