Look into a Gary Fischer. Quality for what you'll need it for and not outrageous.

Craigslist. Find a formerly 1k front suspension bike for a few hundred and then get it tuned up.

I second bikes direct. For cheaper options, look for commuter/single speed bikes on craigslist. Dozens of solid options for <$300.

No longer exists. Purchased and absorbed by Trek.

OP, go to your local bike shop and tell them what you want and your budget. They will set you up. Do not go to Academy or Walmart.

I saw two guys biking down Washington the other day in the opposite direction that I was going. They were side by side with a line of cars behind them. I think that front car was trying to draft, they were so close.

For commuting just get a single speed, especially a short commute without lots of hills. The simplicity will save you aggravation and time. There is a reason they are the choice of bike messengers.

I am reluctant to recommend Bikes Direct if you can't do a basic assembly and tune on a bike. If you can they are the best value, especially for cheap bikes.

I've got a Gary Fisher Wahoo 29er I bought a few years ago when I was thinking about riding 29ers. I decided to stick with the regular sized tires. You can have it for $350.
