I did this 19 days ago. I ended up in the ER twice for no reason other than anxiety panic attacks and withdrawal symptoms. I’m still on track thus far. Good luck to you. When all else fails I just pray.

Find a program that works for you like AA or NA

If you need to detox, go somewhere to do it if possible. The hardest part about quitting is caving to the detox sickness. It can also be very dangerous to detox on your own depending on your drug/Booz of choice.

You may feel like you’re climbing the wall for a couple weeks. I does not last! AA is probably good, but ultimately, don’t obsess over not drinking, and don’t beat yourself up that you’re a bad person. Alcohol and drugs ruin a LOT of lives. You’re already proving smarter than most by quitting now. You don’t need to count days. Your goal is to forget about alcohol, not think about it all of the time. If you slip, start again. I think it’s bs that none of your sober days count if you drink once. I’ve been there, and I can tell you, you won’t feel great all of the time (life is still life) but you won’t believe how much better you feel most of the time!

You’ve turned the corner. Now it’s one day at a time. Don’t worry about tomorrow or next year, just resolve yourself to not drink/get stoned TODAY. Do that everyday.

Sober since August 1986.

I had 3-4 days, then it was over. I put myself in a remote cabin for 5 days.

Im sober 6 months this month. Good luck.

for me, set up a good social network for support

Find a group to talk to, whether that be AA or some other outlet

Exercise for me is a good output of energy

meditation i find calming when i need it, there is an app called Calm that is free, and premium account is not too expensive

Focus on how drugs and alcohol have hurt you, i mean in detail, right all of it down, every single time it cost you something, or could have. Remember those, always. When the urge to use comes back, pull those memories out. Because that what is waiting for you if you do.

As cliche as it is, do the 12 steps, particularly 1-5. especially 1. See my point above, those instances, that is your powerlessness over substances.

And as others have said, if your drinking has been very bad, you may want to seek medical aid before quitting all together. They will give you medications so you dont have a seizure or worse. I have had a seizure from self attempted sobriety. not fun.

Depending on your history you might need medical supervision to stop. But you may be surprised at how quickly the cravings disappear. It gets easier over time. Everyone finds their own way. I don’t know you but I am very proud of you!!!
I will pray for you.

I look for this thread after every home game and it always delivers.

I'm with you, OP. I quit drinking about 6 mos ago and it's the best decision I ever made. There's a LOT of good NA craft beers I found that made it a much easier switch. Check out NAbrews.com

It is different for everyone. You have to do whatever you can to support the decision you made.

Is it for alcohol? If so, go to your doctor and ask for Naltrexone. You do not have to stop drinking just take the pill. Naltrexone has a 99% effective rate against alcohol. It works over time. It slowly takes away that voice in your head that is telling you that you need a drink. It takes about a year. You will go from drinking everyday to once a week to once a month. I was a very heavy drinker and I have been sober for 13yrs. No BS AA meetings...No expensive counseling. I do not even think about drinking now. I am the designated driver and I love it. It is the best thing I have ever done for myself. I am sure I would be dead if I had not done it...GL...If you would like to discuss it please let me know!!

-Surround yourself with people that will support you not try to keep you in your bondage.
-Get in a good program that will add a support network.
-Get in he gym!
-Stay away from things that will trigger the strong desire to use again.

Program and a therapist.

Depending on what you’re trying to quit, don’t be foolish. You may need detox.

Benzo and alcohol withdrawal can be fatal if not done properly.

How much alcohol does one need to be consuming to worry about medical help when quitting? I’ve always wondered where the line is. I think I’m going to quit drinking, it’s causing me such horrible anxiety and the only way to ease the anxiety is to drink and it’s an endless cycle of torture. I should have just gotten treatment for my anxiety but instead I started self medicating and now it’s gone too far.

If you wake up shaking and are sick until you drink you probably should do a medical detox.

I never got to that point even though I drank every day. My main drug of choice was cocaine. I estimate I have personally consumed about 5 kilos of cocaine in my lifetime. I'm a freak of nature and lucky to be alive. There's really no medical detox required for heavy cocaine use either. Basically I was just really tired for about 10 days.

This. True withdrawal symptoms beyond a craving or discomfort.

Thank all of you for the advice. I wasn’t an everyday drinker, but about 4/5 days out of the week I was getting really hammered and doing an abundance of coke. I’m just trying to take everything one step at a time, I love my parents and friends way too much to be dead before I’m 25 and that is my motivation right now. Luckily I got in the gym about 3 months ago or I dont know what I would do. I will keep you all updated on my journey, thank all of you for the words of encouragement.
