Now that you've seen my sweet calves, how does your opinion change? Going out in a bit for a test run, we'll see how this goes. I've had the running shoes for a year or so. Bought them with the intention of getting into running. Needless to say, I wish that would have materialized.

We’re you homeschooled? Or are you just a huge nerd?

This is similar to the rare “legit WHYI” thread, only instead it’s a legit “can he do it?” thread
I’ve changed my mind five times reading through the responses
I still think cramping is his biggest obstacle.
OP, if you’re not stretching and practicing form right now then you’re already fricking up
You need to practice form to A) preserve your legs B) look like you actually do this every now and then

Come clean and tell her you wanted to impress her by having something else in common
Then tell her you want to share this 5k experience with her anyways, and then suck it up butter cup and throw a Hail Mary.

This seems like a seinfield episode.

I think he can do it, but I'm assuming he's (relatively) young.
Hell, I could still do pretty crazy stuff in my 30s, esp. if trim was involved.

Agree, but do that after.
You don't want to start off a new relationship lying already.
Save that for marriage.

80 degrees and humidity out the butt. No training. You gonna die boy! You will be panting like an old dog after Half mile. You will walk after 1 mile. Become dejected at the water station. Start crying at 2 miles and shlep away never to see her again because of pure humiliation.

I hope the girl outruns your arse so bad.

If you fail, tell her you thought she was talking about metric minutes. Say that it takes you 40 in english minutes.
Girls love a good joke.

Show up in a full suit, work the crowd, pull a beer out of your pocket and shotgun it at the starting line
You’ll be the life of the party and no one will notice or care that you finished in 45 minutes

It's gonna be hot and humid on Saturday. You're gonna die.
But seriously, I would do a 1 mile test.
Wear a watch and time yourself doing a slow jog. From that info, you should be able to figure out how fast or slow you need to go to stay under 29 minutes.
For the 5K:
Eat very little to nothing for breakfast otherwise you will see it again at the finish line.
Take an Advil for the upcoming pain.
Warm up by walking only. Do a slow jog in place for like 10 secs. That's it. You're done! Don't get hot. Get barely warm and get the blood moving. Don't stretch, you don't want to tear muscle fibers right before the race.
When the race starts, keep up with the girl for a quarter mile. As the crowd thins, pick up your pace. Once out of sight of your the girl, around the 1 mile mark, walk a little and catch your breath. Start your slow job again for as long as you can and try to keep pace. Walk only when you can't breath. Once the finish line is in sight, probably a 1/4 mile out, start pushing yourself and try your best to finish strong. You can rest at the finish line. You'll have 3 to 5 minutes to pull yourself together before the girl finishes.

Nice calves. You don’t look like a big dude so I think you will be fine.
Are you going to be sweaty and feel like death? Yes.
But you can do this with the right stretching and motivation. Starting drinking water like crazy today until race day.
