Error on the center fielder is nothing to brag about

Mine was based on college. I understand your being underwhelmed.
Many years ago (just arrived that moment to my basic training company):
Junior Drill Sergeant of my company (and all of 5 feet, 4 inches tall): "WHY ARE YOU AN E-3!?!?!!"
PFC Ace Midnight: "I have college, sergeant!"
JDS: "WELL, WHOOPITY shite!"

Did you still have to go through training? And, was it just pay or could you boss people around of a less rank immediately?

Damn, I missed out on that sweet E-3 with less than two money.

Absolutely.

The difference between E-1, E-2 and E-3 is primarily pay, although "senior ranking person" always applies if there is a lack of NCO. The bigger jumps are to E-4 and, especially to E-5.

Yep. That was pretty sweet. I think I made about $15 more per day during OSUT.
I was never "promoted" as an enlisted man, though. I was administratively promoted to cadet/E-5 when I signed my ROTC contract, but I don't really count that as a promotion. It was all downhill from there.

The rate/specialty I signed up for meant I was automatically ranked E3 once I came out of boot camp. My enlistment contract stated that if I graduated my "A" school, I would advance to E-4. I became an E-4 within the first 6 months of my enlistment.
Technically, you can "boss" around guys ranked lower than you but no one really does as the ranks E-1 to E-4 are all generally considered "junior" in the Navy

E-4s in the Army can get away with a certain amount of bossing around the privates but an E-3 would just get laughed at. I hear the Marines take those lower ranks seriously though.

Similar, due to college I went in as and E-3 and was CAP'd (Command Advancement Program) to E-4 by the Captain of my 1st ship so it took about a year to make E-4.

All that is true - and in the Army we even have the specialist and corporal divide. Corporal is like a "junior" sergeant/E-5, whereas specialist is like a "super" private first class. Same pay grade, gulf of difference in perception - particularly in that the leadership had to go out of their way to recognize an E-4 with the lateral promotion.

Congrats! I'll find out soon if I'm SELBRD ELG for E-7.

Yeah, I wasn't even going to attempt to explain spec/corporal.

Almost certainly AF. E-8 comes out tomorrow for the masses.

I would make a great Secretary of Defense but I would not want to be in the military. I have a lot of respect for the military and the people in the military.

I'm supremely glad I never have to worry about promotion boards or any of that crap ever again.
34 months and done.

No, you would not. Shoot higher - Secretary of State. You couldn't possibly be worse than the last 2.
