Congrats and remember your PT belt otherwise you and your men could be killed or injured by the enemy.

That would be an O-6 in the USN and USCG, and an O-3 in the less fabulous branches.

E-8 is a Master or First (Top) Sergeant in the US Army and USMC, and some combination of master chief petty technical coordinating whatever in the technical branches.

My initial thought was 1 private, 2 and 3, the 2 corporal types, 4,5,6 the three sergeant types, 7 lt. and 8 captain.

Way off. Lt and captain are officer ranks.

There are 9 enlisted grades - they are all some combination of private/seaman - sorry "seaperson" - up to Sergeant Major/Master Chief Petty Officer.

Skipping warrants (not in all branches) - there are 10 commissioned officer grades from Ensign/2nd Lieutenant up to (full) Admiral/(full) General (4 stars).

I know. After I posted, I texted a friend who is in the Marines and asked if E-8 meant Captain.

The reply: "hell no"

What is a warrant?

Why is a Captain higher in the Navy than in the Marines?

Subject matter experts - many of them are helicopter pilots in the Army, for example. "Rank" wise, they are given privileges of an officer and are between the highest enlisted rank (E-9) and the lowest O grade (O-1, 2LT and Ensign).

It's just what they call it. Other branches call O-3 "Captain". Navy "Captains" are equivalent to full or "bird" colonels in other branches (O-6).
