They're different ranks, navy cpt =\= marine cpt
I understand but from my google, why would a Captain in one branch be higher than in another?
Why is a commander higher in the navy than a captain? If you are a "commander" you should be the boss. I would think a Captain would answer to a commander, not vice versa.

I thought Top was a 9 ? no ?
9 is a Sergeant Major. There's no short for that, other than "Sartmajor."
E-8 is "Top" in the Army. Not 100% about USMC.

Because they're different ranks in different branches. I don't know how to explain it any clearer.
Navy Captain is O-6
Marine Captain is O-3
Navy Captain is O-6
Marine Captain is O-3

It isn't and don't confuse the "postion" of commander with the Naval/CG rank of "commander" - further complicating it in the Navy is that they have the position of "Captain" that can be a lower grade for a smaller vessel.
Maybe this helps:

E-8 maybe called "top" in pog Army units but in the infantry units I served calling 1st Sgt Top would end badly for you.

Fair enough, but they've all worked for me, at least ostensibly, since 1990.

They're the same rank in name only. A navy captain is an O6, an Army captain is an O3. Different branches have different ranks and customs.

Yeah - we still need a military board - badly.

Because they were Airborne Rangers and they felt being called Top was beneath them.

Not to be redundant, but why?
Posted on 3/2/16 at 12:03 pm to SniperActual6
Since when? We always called our First Sgt Top. What units were you in? Also what was your rank. The lower enlisted generally referred to ours as 1st Sgt. NCO's commonly referred to him as Top.

I usually referred to my E-7/E-8's as "frickhead"

Congrats. I'm hoping to make it this year too. Test when I get home.
