But whatever

I understand it to a degree. I understand the smart contracts. I can't keep up with all of the damn ICOs, but I follow it more than the average person.

My question still remains - what separates Bitcoin? The only redeeming quality is that it was first, no? The technology of the blockchain has been improved by successors, so why should I own BTC?

And to clarify, you can be right about something being ultimately worthless and still miss out on the speculative run.

What is Bitcoin's niche? Currency only, right?
originally. it has evolved to being just a store of value though. when the dust settles, bitcoin will be worthless IMO, but other cryptos will be extremely valuable, especially those which will have staking rights

I won’t say I understand it 100%, but I know enough to say blockchain is the real value, not the BTC

to buy other cryptos, and to hedge yourself against those in the short term

I never really went away - bitcoin threads did for a while on the Money Talk though. I wish I had some, no doubt about it, but I've yet to be convinced that Bitcoin specifically is the future.

eventually, you are probably right, but not now. Bitcoin will serve its purpose until it isn't needed anymore

It may not be the future but it is a start, which will lead to other crypto's that offer more value. Hence, owning BTC means being able to buy those cryto's. Especially since many are not available via USD

I've basically been making fun of the Bitcoin nerds since like 2010 and now that it's dropping it looks like I was right all along

Of course, but why should I believe multiple blockchains are necessary? More importantly, why would it be one of the current ones?

different benefits from each. look up FUN. look up BAT. read the whitepapers and see what the developers envision.

it may not be. Bitcoin enjoyed significant first mover advantage, but I am supremely confident that Ethereum will overtake BTC in the coming years. look up the infinite ways ETH's tech can be used.

the end of bitcoin will be because of the absolute game changing success of one of its successors. Once USD can be swapped instantly for all cryptos, it will start to fade away.

ETA: if its the combo of ETH and OMG I am buying an island

USD will always be around because there’s always a need, even for the government, when it comes to untraceable cash.

Plenty of industries.

Maritime shipping is going big into blockchain.

The industry that supplies broke, russian, etc with 90% of their belongings is using it going forward. But yea

the point is decentralization

It'll be interesting to see how this market looks in 6 months, a lot of projects are finally about to become more than vaporware.

i too also agree with the general sentiment that the top 5 currency coins don't necessarily do anything but move money around .. the future value is definitely in coins that aim to solve a problem

Privacy coins will also be big in 2018

a little fluctuation never killed anyone right?

I'm up 418% in the last 9 days over my initial investment.

How?

Playing the smaller coins against bitcoin fluctuation.

If the .01% chance thing actually happens and it continues at this rate, I will quit my job at the end of february.

Permanently.

The new crop of "investors" who are solely influenced by price has been a boone for those of us willing to buy and sell before reaching the valleys and peaks.
