I was at an elderly relatives house last week and they were telling me how AT&T has been harassing them non-stop since the floods last year.
Their U-Verse equipment was lost in the flood along with everything else since they took on 6 feet of water. No insurance

AT&T has been demanding that they box up and send back equipment or pay for it. It was explained to everyone of the nimrods who have called that the equipment was ruined and thrown out with the piles of gutted house.

This poor old lady was almost in tears now because AT&T has now turned them over to a collections agency.

Has anyone else heard of this issue or do you know of anyone who can be contacted about this?
Maybe they were supposed to just write a check, but it seems like a damn shitty way to conduct business.

Same thing happened to my Grandmother, but she boxed up the equipment and sent it back. So everything worked out.

AT&T has the absolute worst and most inept customer service department I've ever encountered

Just ignore them. When the collection agency calls tell them it's in dispute.

I had to do this with a modem from Att. It took a little bit but it went away.

Call her Congressman... write up the complete scenario (including making and elderly woman cry) and plaster that shite all over their social media pages.

frick AT&T.

Cox asked us to return the "ruined" equipment before issuing replacements. It wasn't a problem for us. I guess we realized that we did not own those items and simply set them aside to see how Cox would handle it.

I don't guess they bothered to take photos of the debris as they discarded stuff either? We were advised to do so immediately after demolition started.

I guess FEMA at least visited their home, right? I would try to contact them to see if they can issue some type of "proof of loss" document that shows the level of damage. If they can show the level of water, they can logically explain the loss of equipment. Otherwise, I'm sure companies like AT&T get burnt in cases where maybe a house only got a couple inches of water and the equipment is claimed to be lost, when really it is not.

I returned my ruined boxes. It was actually one of the minor hiccups in resuming my service.

Their installation crew destroyed my brand new tv during the new box installation and I had to go through hell to get it replaced.

After telling me, 3+ separate times, that my issue had been resolved. AT&T somehow deducted over $400.00 out of my checking account. I gave my bank and AT&T a ration of shite.I also contacted the BBB, I don't know if that did any good but it got resolved. They refunded the money. This was all due to AT&T customer service being a bunch of dumb asses.

I see it all the time. You're responsible for the equipment while it's in your possession as it's just a rental. Those items would have been covered under the home owners insurance if they had it. It's not ATT Fault that your elderly relative didn't have flood insurance. The charge couldn't have been much more than 70 a box if that. Just pay it and move on or not pay it and let it reflect on your credit score. Pretty easy decision when you take emotions out of it

Yep. I switched carriers after the flood due to the way their customer service treated my extended family who had lost everything. They can EAD.

Whatever you dumbass.
Not only was it the equipment, they kept trying to bill for services in a massive flood zone even after several calls were made to cancel service

If you lost the stuff due to an "act of god" then i dont think you have to send it back and get punished or fees because of it. I would look up info about it, I honestly think they cant do that as long as you have documentation showing you list your belongings during a "act of god".

In the aftermath of Katrina, I would have dearly loved to have shipped AT&T a sewage-encrusted piece of equipment with a note explaining exactly what the filth on the outside was.

Update- a friend contacted someone at a Baton Rouge news station today. News station seems to have been on AT&Ts arse last year about all kinds of stupidity.
Within 6 hours someone from AT&T called and apologized and cleared the bill. Tried to blame it on something or another.

So stupid that they wasted so much of their workers time making phone calls and chasing money over what was probably $75 worth of true cost.
