Is commercial and/or industrial fire alarm or fire systems technician a good job?

Well it's not for me. It's for my nephew. Does anyone know how well it pays, growth potential, etc?

No experience here but my general rule for good career fields is:
1) Product/service that is absolutely necessary.
2) Something that most people can’t or won’t do.

I think it is. Always see these companies hiring. May want to start in New construction installing sprinklers then get into alarms after that.

If he’s good at it, he’ll always have a job. Every building out there has to have a fire alarm system. Not a difficult business to start up your own either.

It's a specialty. Those guys are the only ones who work on them, so the work is ALWAYS going to be there. Buildings all require them by code. I'm a plumber and we occasionally get calls from clueless owners (same for irrigation) thinking it's something we work on. Nope, call your fire systems guy(s.)
Seems like it would be a pretty simple trade field to specialize in and understand. If he can show up to work every day ready to go and willing to learn and work then it shouldn't be hard to be successful in it.

If he can encompass multiple special systems and not just fire he would be extremely desirable.
Fire alarm, data, access controls, video, security, etc, etc.
Buildings are getting smarter, there's way more crap in buildings these days.

i know a guy that did fire and security. Pay was decent, he ended up using that experience to move to IT infrastructure and got a nice bump in pay and benefits

The businesses that do this make their money on the annual maintenance contracts. I used to manage construction and maintenance on all of the BP gas stations on Long Island. New York required gas stations to have fire suppression. We only had one approved vendor because no one else met the safety standards. He did very well for himself on compliance calls alone, but also had all of our new install business which became less and less common.

Also has to have fire suppression systems and extinguishers. All that stuff has to be inspected regularly, maybe monthly.
