My Dad is from Michigan. After Katrina I lived there for a year. Outside of Detroit and Ann Arbor, the whole of Michigan is very Mid-West. Farmland and good old boys.
Michigan is honestly kind of just a unique place. You have lake houses every where, nice cities next to poor cities, places like Frankenmuth and Mackinac, a bunch of big college towns. Really beautiful place.

If you imagine the South as a separate country and people group (as many in our government do) it becomes very easy to see why they decided on that name.
In their mind, it's East, West and then that stretch from Ohio to Kansas. "Midwest" maybe?

This is dumb, Michigan is clearly not midwestern, rather it’s a western state. I mean the Michigan fight song hail to the victors is pretty clear:
Hail hail to Michigan the champions of the west !

Before the Big 10, the first conference that Michigan was in was the Western Conference, consisting of Michigan, the University of Chicago, llinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Northwestern, and Purdue.
Michigan beat Chicago to win the conference title and the song was written.
