I think this is the driver behind a lot of the conspiracy theories. That, and the gross oversimplification of very complex things.
Also, there are conspiracy theories that are plausible and some proven to be true. This helps them justify that they’re right on pretty much anything they want to believe. There’s never any shred of doubt, it’s only black and white.

yeah I know somebody like that. Refuses to vax there kids for anything. Always brings it up and then gets offended when folks ask questions. Says let me send you my research and the research is always a facebook or instagram post.

As far as dumb conspiracy theories go the idea that the United States is actually the ancient biblical world is probably the dumbest of the lot
