That is the truth. I watched my big tomcat dismember a rabbit the other day. He ate everything but the head and one of its kidneys.

5 vials of antivenom, Yorkie didn't make it. Called it at 2 am this morning. GSP is doing better, eating and drinking, swelling is still very bad. Might keep him another night.

Best guess is juvenile snake and they both got a large dose of venom.

I’m so sorry for your loss

“Dogs’ lives are short, too short, but you know that going in. You know the pain is coming, you’re going to lose a dog, and there’s going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can’t support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion.
There’s such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware that it comes with an unbearable price.” – Dean Koontz

Pretty common practice for most of the serious collectors/handlers have their own stock of antivenom. At least enough to get started while the medical facility sources more.

I had a dog get bit by a juvenile copperhead and the swelling was as bad as or worse than any I had ever seen.

Damn, which snake can suck a dick, the one by the pond or the one treating your dogs?

How much would 2 new dogs cost?

I thought dogs could handle run of the mill snake bites? Maybe not like a coral snake…

My Westies just kill snakes when they see them.

I have a mixed breed that I am pretty sure has some jack Russell in her or some type of terrier. She is fast AF. I don't like when she finds a snake, but she will get ahold to one, shake it real hard then take off running, go back and do it again and after about the 3rd or 4th time its dead.

Luckily all she has came across were grass snakes, a king snake, etc... so far. But the way she works a snake is impressive.

I was wrong. The price I saw last night must have been woefully outdated. Those vials are really expensive from the wholesaler. Apologies to the vet.

Depends on where the bite is and how much venom - Timbers and Mocs much worse than copperheads. Although a copperhead once cost me a healthy amount

Yup.

If you get a hot bite, it's better to come from a juvenile because their venom glands are smaller.

If they decide to use it, snakes don't moderate venom use. It's like cops and guns. They don't shoot unless they're ready to kill, and if that's the case, they empty the mag. Adult snakes know that their venom isn't likely to kill a human fast enough to be useful defense, so they're believed to be less inclined to use it and just issue a dry 'warning' bite. But if it does envenomate, it's using as much as it can.

The myth likely stems from juveniles being more inclined to use venom at all, thus dry bites are more common from adults and seemingly 'less potent'.

No worries, it's a very commonly believed myth. Just letting you know it may not (imo probably not) have been a juvenile.

Probably no solace, but it's very possible it took a big 'ol timber or cotton to take your buddy out, and not some wimpy baby snake.

Sorry for your loss. Terrible day.
