normal service 18-20% easily.
but if the service went like this (happened saturday...wasn't super busy either at 6PM)
1. 10 minutes for you to take my drink order from the time I am seated
2. then another 15 minutes to get me the drink
3. half an hour before i place an order (including an app)
4. still no refill
5. 30 minutes later i get all my food at once, but I'm watching the appetizer in the window the whole time..
6. ask for a refill for you to say okay as you leave.
7. still no refill 10 minutes later, so I have to ask another waiter/waitress/manager
8. see you sitting in a corner texting on your phone
9. finish my meal and wait for another 15 minutes before i flag down the manager for the check
10. then you notice i flagged down the manager, so you run and come by and ask how it was, ask for dessert, etc.
don't expect a tip.

i always tip. 5% for horrible service (and never go back) 14% for adequate service & 20% for outstanding service

I agree w/ you -- too many servers these days think they're entitled to a tip "just because."
A tip, in my opinion, is something extra that you pay for quality service. If you don't give me good service, then you don't get a tip from me. Pretty simple.

Bad service = 5% or so - so they'll make around minimum wage.
From there, average service nets you 15%. Great service 25-35%.

I only withhold the tip if the server is terrible.
You should still tip at least 10% as that tip also goes to the bus boy and other members of the wait staff that you likely had limited if any contact. While you may be taking it out on the server, it unfairly penalizes other workers.

Servers aren't even a necessity. I'd rather go get my food from the counter myself. The only person at a restaurant that does shite I couldn't already do with minimum effort is the chef.

If I go to Chili's, I accept the service for what it is and will tip 20%, it's not the server's fault that their company hires ppl who are bad at their job. If I go to Ruth's, I'll tip 20% regardless because your tipping for the ambience, bussers, and bartenders as well.
You are the reason they feel so damn entitled.

You've never worked in a restaurant, so you have no legitimate perspective my friend.
ETA: if you go to a shitty restaurant, tipping poorly bc the service wasn't good just makes you look stupid; what'd you expect?
Go to a nice restaurant. And if you go to a nice restaurant your tipping for menu knowledge, recommendations, etc. So if you're going to judge the service in a nice restaurant, ask a lot of questions and judge their knowledge. And nice restaurants try to assume the pace so if you're trying to go faster/slower, let the server know, don't expect Ihop pace at a really nice restaurant and blame them after the fact.

Stop talking about restaurants like a veteran talks about a war zone. I can have perspective on the issue because I've dealt with crappy service before and I've realize that in the service industry, the consumer shouldn't pay if someone doesn't provide the service they are entitled to as the customer.

I just hate entitled assholes in general ... And if service is terrible, no tip, & I never tip at drive-thrus. I lol at places that have the fricking tip jar/can sitting at the window.

You just don't get it, do you? Until you've actually worked in the field that requires the same level of education as a garbage man, you can never understand.

How/why TF would you compare my comments to a veteran talking about a war zone?

War zone= somewhere only those have worked or been in can understand.
You're acting like being a server is some terrible thing that no outsider could possibly have any perspective on.

Does kind of sound like a Dwight talking head now that I think about it. Still not ashamed tho
Posted on 4/10/17 at 11:09 pm to _Hurricane_
And you're essentially saying that men and women who have been in a war zone would understand bc they'd compare that to serving in a restaurant?
That's the parallel your drawing.

I'm pretty critical of service & don't apologize for it. I worked at an upscale restaurant throughout college, and was trained by the real deal, very old school, proper, & strict. I rarely see the level of good service that was standard when I was in food & beverage.
Posted on 4/10/17 at 11:12 pm to RocketPower13
No. I'm saying that you are treating working at a restaurant as if it so terrible that no outsider could dare have a differing opinion on anything restaurant related because they haven't experienced working in one. Just like a veteran would treat a civilian talking about a war zone.
Posted on 4/10/17 at 11:12 pm to _Hurricane_
I tip 25% basically every single time. More if I'm drunk.

I do think everyone should have to have a restaurant job once in their life.
