It says a lot about someone who find himself in a situation where he has a little bit of leverage and feels compelled to be a dick.

there's some truth there, but I'd rather not refill my own cups. Even if waiters are unworthy, they still have jobs I would dread, so basically I feel bad enough that I don't mind giving good tip. I'd rather scoop human feces than wait on people.

"Don't tip very rarely" was a poor choice of words. What meant was that I break ever choose not to tip. It has to be pretty bad.

I was just fricking with you man. I was actually having this discussion the other day with someone. I rarely sit down at places anymore I just call in or use the Waitr app, pick it up and bring it home where I don't have to worry about that shite. I have friends who bust their arse in the service industry and they tell me horror stories about patrons. But it works both ways- some servers aren't worth a shite either.

Or maybe a waiter could just choose to be like 95% of his colleagues and come by the table more than just to take my order and not act like a dick while doing it?

Have you ever done it? And dealt with people who have to deal with customers that have the shitty mindset you have day in/day out? Don't knock it to this degree until you try it..

Why should they come out of pocket to wait on you?

This is true..do you want to work for $7.25 an hour? I have some friends in the restaurant industry and may be able to get you a serving job.

My shitty mindset? All I'm saying is that a waiter should actually do their job in order to be paid. How the frick is that controversial?

I usually tip in the 20% range but if the service is really bad I will leave $1 just so they know I didn't forget. This has only happened 2 or 3 times in my life.

It the service is next level bad I am walking out and making sure the manager knows about it. This has happened a couple of times and both times it was when the server got really rude because they fricked up.

I don't give a shite what that means for the server. You have one job when I am there. I am pretty tolerant of you just own up and seem genuine. If you cop an attitude all bets are off.

I don't think people realize that I only don't tip in rare circumstances. I'm just saying that those waiters shouldn't be self-righteous or entitled to something for doing their job terribly and being abrasive.

I waited tables and tended bar in my younger days and I always tip, (usually at least 15%). If the service sucks they get 10% if it's good I go 20%. I understand the tip share, the shitty hourly wage and all that. Unless you've been there you don't get it. all that being said waiting tables and tending bar is one of the best jobs a youngster can have while in school. I really enjoyed the "benefits" as a bartender.

Wait tables one day on a busy Friday night. I'll sit in your section and play you. It's not an easy job it's stressful as hell and the server's whole livelihood is based on their guests perceptions of them, regardless of everything else that may be going on in the restaurant.

Lately I've even been tipping a couple bucks on counter service if they are polite and efficient. A couple of months ago I left cash down to the penny, the guy went out of his way to be a dick and not help us, frick that. Most people would have complained to a manager, I just wanted to GTFO and never set foot in there again.

I'm with the OP, I've left 0 tip maybe 4 times in my life when the waiter was just down right terrible. Not incompetent terrible, out of his or her way rude terrible. I'm usually very patient with newbies or mess ups if it's done with politeness.

And my perception is always good of my servers. They have to do something really bad in order to change it. But if they do change it to an extreme enough degree, I will not tip.

I don't have to get it. Your job is to serve me and be polite about it. Honest mistakes are OK. You have a bad attitude and all bets are off.

How about we pay them a normal wage rather than have them live off tips.

The argument against it is that it keeps them honest.

The tards in this thread apparently don't keep them honest anyway so tips don't serve a purpose.

Exactly^ I'm not talking about mistakes. You could drop soup on me and I would tip. You have to be a total douche for me to not tip.

If I go to Chili's, I accept the service for what it is and will tip 20%, it's not the server's fault that their company hires ppl who are bad at their job. If I go to Ruth's, I'll tip 20% regardless because your tipping for the ambience, bussers, and bartenders as well.

Sounds like you just need to be more selective on the quality of restaurants you go to
