I saw a CSI episode once. Apparently they have elaborate animal costumes with flaps so they can hook up without seeing each other.
Not sure if that's real or just a plot device. And don't care to find out either.

As others have said, while weird as frick, furries have been around quite a while now. I'm not sure how you would have avoided any and all mentions of them up to this point.

There is a photo out there of his trans lover in a puppy costume. This is a very real fantasy carried out to real life. Lots of kitties as well as puppies.

I remember watching an HBO documentary about these people. At the time it blew my mind.
I just found this on youtube.
People need to get bullied. I am not talking about getting the shite beat out of them, but doing it to some degree helps people like this in the long run.
