Do people really pay a blatant overcharge for shipping though?

I don’t overcharge a ton, maybe a dollar or two, to pay for the packaging. The biggest ripoff is Priority Mail, especially the flat rate boxes. When I go to the post office, I tell them to ship cheapest way possible, which is usually retail or first class.
So your $15 shirt, only costs about $5-$6 in postage, and I’ll add $1 for the box. The same shirt will cost $8 plus with Priority Mail. If you don’t ask them, they will send it priority every time, because it’s easier for them.
You said you paid $15 to ship that shirt. You must have used a medium flat rate priority box, it’s $15.10 to ship.
You use to be able to go into the post office and get all kinds of priority boxes. Now they only carry flat rate boxes and people don’t know what that is. You have to order non flat rate boxes off their website.

I can honestly say that my biggest lose in the last year was $8 on a Mickey Mouse Christmas train. I forgot to look in the battery compartment before buying it. I get it home and find four corroded batteries. I clean it the best that I can, put new batteries in it, nothing. It didn’t work. I gave it to my neighbor, who is going to gut the engine so it will roll freely, and let his kid play with it. It was a complete set with cars and track, just the engine didn’t work.

I can't believe a Mickey Mouse collector wouldn't have paid primo bucks, working or not, to have a train as a display item. Were they mass produced to where a non-working item is trash?

I'm a bit surprised at some of the prices you are getting for items. Are you selling on craigslist, facebook, etc?

That’s pretty cool that you are getting to flip all this for a profit

As far as USPS goes the good thing about them is you can get those boxes for free. Order a bunch of them from their website and you don’t have to go in to pick up a few of them. You can also get the commercial rate that makes that $15.05 medium size only $13 and some change. You can charge the publicized rate of 15.05 to make a cop bucks. Who cares what it cost if the buyer is paying for shipping. It is always the same price no matter what it is, you don’t have to weigh it out and measure it, and you don’t have to deal with the price changing every time.

Not saying that the post office is the best way to ship just throwing that out there.

If you ship UPS you can get their world ship program and a label printer and streamlined the shipping from home. You also can get negotiated rates depending on how much you ship to get better prices. You can get the labels for free from them. But now you have to buy boxes and tape.

I don’t like fedex so

ebay and paypal fees do cut into that fairly deep but sometimes thats the best way to sell an item.

Honestly, I wish I had a hobby that could make me money. All my hobbies just drain my bank account.

You collecting sales tax? You are more than just an "occasional seller"

So jealous of your entrepreneurial efforts. I used to dabble in things like this. Makes me want to give it another go.

The fact is the only way it gets found and bought is is someone is looking for it.

I can easily believe the classic Burberry lined coat and scarf. The newer Burberry classic looks are not anywhere near as fine as the ones you had.

Yes, they have free boxes, but you have to us Priority Mail if you use their boxes, which could cost you more if you don’t know what you are doing. Don’t get me wrong, Priority works well with a lot of items and you get free boxes.
That snowboard I sold, postage was $32 if shipped retail, and nearly $50 if shipped priority. They don’t make a priority box big enough for a snowboard, so I had to get a box made (which was $20)
