Nobody is asking him to sing. He should stand at the playing of his nation's anthem. Even if it were the anthem of another nation (say he was Canadian, eh?). If he were an American playing basketball in Europe he should stand for the anthem of the host nation.
Not sing. Not dance. Not celebrate. Stand. As a gesture of respect. Something that a 4-year old can be taught to do.
