Never knew of SP until I had it once. Took me a few days to analyze what happened. Thought a presence had me pinned to my bed. Couldn’t move a muscle or talk. Finally pulled the covers over my head, caught my breath, got up and left at 2am. Never been in that room since: grandmas visitor room.

I used to do this often, 2-3 times a month. Got worse when i was using heavily. Got clean and I havent had them often at all. Sleeping on my stomach did help a lot but occasionally I would get it even then. As for lucid dreaming, I could do it occasionally but not often. Trick i always used to come out of SP was try to wiggle my toes or my fingers and really concentrate.

Personally i dont think our eyes are open, our minds are recalling the very familiar images of our bedrooms which would make the other visions some see as merely part of a dream.

But why the exact same subset of images across all cultures and history? That’s a crazy fact everyone is glossing over.

As different as our belief systems and experiences are across cultures, as much as they have changed throughout history, and yet the images are consistent.

That’s the real mystery to me.

I just experienced this last night

I was in the middle of a dream that turned into a nightmare. I woke up and had a feeling as if my nightmare had continued on into my bedroom. I tried to move but couldn't and I spent what seemed to be about a minute trying to scream and move but I was completely stuck. I felt a horrible dread/presence in the room that was as terrifying as anything I've ever experienced.(I watch a ton of horror so pretty messed up stuff) I finally managed a pitiful whining scream and my dog jumped up and then I was able to move.

I still didn't think I was awake at that point and had to wake up my wife and have her talk to me for me to believe it.

Absolutely the most terrifying thing I've ever experienced.

I've experienced minor versions, mostly when it's morning so it's not as freaky but for some reason the transition from nightmare to awake and feeling that it continued into the room prevented me from being "lucid" about it.

It was like Event Horizon/Baskin/Babadook/hellraiser all in one

I’ve had SP experiences where I could move and respond.

Still trying to figure that out

SP is among the worst experiences

It’s awful. Sometimes it feels like you are floating throughout the house, everything is extremely vivid and you feel like you are moving and you aren’t.. then you recognize it and you can’t wake yourself from it.. you fight it so hard and yet still can’t wake from it.

A couple of things that truly help

#1 it almost always only happens to people who sleep on their back. This is still the only way I can sleep.. so try propping your head up on pillows or having a different angle while sleeping. This is the most important. Try whatever you can to position your body, or at least your head, differently.

#2 an extremely odd trick, but try washing your feet before bed. I know this sounds crazy but when I was going through sleep paralysis really bad I tried it and it worked..

#3 try to eliminate stress. Although there is no exact known cause, stress doesn’t help. Rub some magnesium lotion on your body before bed.

#4 try wiggling or moving your toes to beak it. (Someone mentioned hand, but try feet)

I’ve had the sleep paralysis where it felt like a person/spirit was sitting on me and crushing me and I could not break from it. It’s extremely unpleasant.

Lack of sleep can cause it to happen.. try to get into a healthy bed time routine where you are relaxed. Perhaps write down all your thoughts before sleep so you don’t have any worries. I do this every night and it helps sooo much. I know how scary it is and how you may be reluctant to want to go to bed, but sleep is important.

I've never had it so I'm curious. When you are in the middle of it are you awake, as in, others that that might actually be in the room could see you lying still with your eyes open. Or do you appear outwardly to be sleeping?

I experienced this crap about a week after reading this thread. I didn’t see the woman ghost, but did feel a presence and heard it. Before I read this thread I had never heard of it. When I read this thread I thought it was complete BS. After experiencing it I am not so sure I wasn’t just too lazy to get out of the bed and get some water, but it seemed real.

This happened to me once. I was sleeping and it was around 7 am and i could hear my young cousin (4 or 5 years old) telling her sister that she was gonna throw a pillow at me. I tried to tell her that if she threw the pillow I was "Gonna get her" as in tickle the shot out of her but when I went to talk, nothing came out.

Pretty spooky feeling.

Luckily she threw the pillow at me and my body woke up.

Youre mind is awake but your body is not.

At least for me, I couldn't open my eyes but I was aware of the conversations happening in the room.

It would be difficult to observe but I would imagine I would appear with my eyes wide open
