Will a shite ton of truckers be displaced by self-driving trucks within the next ten years?
I can see drivers bring more passive and sort of “managing” the truck. But they will have to be there to intervene.
Perhaps we can get more hours or of a driver if they use that tech and regulations can be updated. I can see being less fatigued after 7-8 hours if you use a Super Cruise style system than if you are dealing with traffic actively.

quote:You can work for a company like mine and the insurance it cost is 12 bucks a month a 3 bucks a week for her to ride. Alot of men bring their woman who don't work and they basically live in the truck together while he works. She helps clean, cook food while he drives , companionship, in house P, etc
Even my ole lady can come ride along when she is off work.
I know a guy when he got started, was pretty much homeless with his wife and young daughter. They let them on the truck(normally you can only let one adult ride along not kids under 12 or more than one person). He literally with his wife and daughter worked on that truck for a straight year and bought his house with a 20k dow payment a year later. He said they traveled all over the country and every weekend off they did different stuff in different cities, went on vacation, did amusement parks on weekends etc. They would park at a terminal or truck stop, uncouple and PC to where ever they wanted to go. Not a bad way to kick your life off. He was like 23yrs old at the time. This guy now makes 100-110k on average each year driving.

You ever had a front tire blowout?
My RV is on a Freightliner Cascadia chassis and the thought scares the chit of me.

quote:yeah/no/no doubles or triples, just single 53 ft trailers. I've pulled 48fters too for another company.
kids still do the "honk the horn" symbol at a passing truck? If so, do you honk the horn?
Do you drive anywhere where they have runaway truck lanes/? If so, have you ever used one?
Have you ever driven a set up with one tractor, two trailers?

why? if everyone did it, it would just be normal. It speeds up the flow of traffic and effectively uses all the area of the road. If you have a 30ft area, why would you only use 15ft of it?
No it wouldn't. It slows/stops both lanes of traffic. Take I-20 in Shreveport for example. I drive the construction area every day. Even if you've never driven it before, signs warn you that the left lane ends at least a mile in advance. There have been a few days where everyone merged into the right lane as soon as they knew the left lane closed ahead. On those days the right lane barely slowed down approaching the one-lane construction area. Then there are most days when most drivers get over in plenty of time but you have a few dozen asswipes that want to cut traffic and go as far in the left lane as possible before forcing their way into the right lane causing traffic in the right lane to come to a complete stop. This "zipper" theory is you justifying cutting the line like a punk teenager at the movies. It's adolescent behavior.

quote:yes completely. My reaction time, what I'm paying attention to all over the road near and far is utter overkill. I notice everthing. You start to become a robot and see "everthing" like in the movie terminator, he has the breakdown of everything in his eyes like a computer screen
you see the road differently now? Is it a zoomed out look where the interstate system is your workplace and distances don’t seem as far?

quote:ryder day cabs? Sleepers? Alot of people like old school. I actually like the new stuff. Automatics. It really isn't hard. It's like driving a giant bus. Make wider turns. That's what I tell people the difference from 4 wheels to 18. Make wider turns. Lol. Hauling cane isn't a bad gig.
I'm 64. I haven't driven since 2015 and that was in 2003-2007 trucks. I applied for a relief driving job at the company I now work at 3 years ago. We get new Ryder lease trucks every other year. I interviewed and saw the technology in our trucks and said no thanks. Unless I get a local job for farmers I'm done.

you drive one of the new electric trucks and get in a wreck, are you semi e-wrecked?

My dad was a truck driver. Much respect.

sorry if already asked. How many hours are you allowed to drive and how do you stay awake. I'm very tired after four/five hours driving by myself behind the wheel (unless I'm chewing tobacco for the nicotine high).

Well, now that I've read the entire thread, I truly believe that if you ever did murder a hooker that she frickin' deserved it.

quote:I guess I never pass thru Atlanta on 20 tbw and the 285 isn't any different than the 635 in Dallas or 610 in Houston. I20 going thru Atlanta is pretty bad but not like Austin. That stretch of i35 has 6 or more lanes at times of pure craziness. This is driving a semi now. Especially at night is a nightmare for a novice driver esp. Top or bottom 35, take your pick. 410 in San Antonio is mad with congestion but they don't seem to be as crazy driving. I've heard people compare Austin i35 traffic to California(L.A.) crazy.
Why is Atlanta not considered your worst place to drive through?

Crack whores or Meth whores at the truckstops?

Is arm wrestling in the trucking community as popular as I think it is? Do you idolize Bull Hurley and Lincoln Hawk?

I can't believe the OT is slipping so much this question is on page 9. Sad times we live in. Jeremy Clarkson would be disappoint.
