To hell with those truckers who block the disappearing lane a mile before is disappears! If that made sense, let's just reduce I-10 to one lane from coast to coast.

I don't do that but I get why sometimes truckers do it. 4 wheel vehicles are flying by trying to cut everyone who is driving correctly in right and middle lanes especially where there is a slow down ahead and trying to cut everyone. So, the trucker gets over blocking them in half the lane. This doesn't move traffic faster is just changes who actually slows down longer.

The real problem have with other people who drive is when you have 3 or even 2 lanes and the left lane of a 3 or 2 lane hwy is going to merge into the middle lane or right lane depending on the amount of lanes and become two lanes for example when maybe an over pass or bridge is coming up that has 2 lanes only or there is construction. The left lane in either scenario that is going to end has signs that tell you the lane ends in 1 mile/half a mile etc. I'm driving a 80k lb payload full 53 foot dry van in middle lane or right lane and as the lane actually ends they are still trying to pass me and run out of room with a railing they crash into and hit their horns like i did something wrong. When your merging to another lane, you always must "yield" to that other lane. People don't get it. As a consequence I see the several skid marks on these spots from accidents and deaths that happen from thinking you have the right of way when merging esp with a semi truck. Crazy.

have an irrational fear of scary bridges. I start sweating and my arse puckers up while I’m death gripping the steering wheel. Pulling a boat across the Huey P bridge does it to me everytime.

I often wonder how big rig drivers could do that shite without having a damn stroke.
I used to be nervous crossing bridges alot. You get used to it. I used to first just go slow and have your imaginary blinders on. Dont think about what's over the side or how high. Lake Charles bridge, Port Arthur , beltway 8 south off 10 in Houston area are pretty intense. That bridge is still under construction, very high and narrow because both lanes are being use while other side are being built and kinda scary.

If you drive one of the new electric trucks and get in a wreck, are you semi e-wrecked?

I mean there are all over the roads. Probably one of the biggest companies. They have bought a few mid sized companies and have hugely expanded. I believe the story goes like this.

There is Walmart. They have their own company. The son of the Walmart guy owns JB Hunt and the daughter(of Walmart mogul) and husband own Swift. Don't quote me on that but that's what I was told once. Walmart isn't just Walmart. They got way more industry going on.

Why do so many people that operate semi trucks have no clue what they are doing - especially around lane usage? It used to be that about 8 out of 10 big rigs were operated near perfectly. Now it seems to be more like 5 out of 10 on a good day, which is only a slightly better score than the average 4 wheeler driver. I’ve seen this degradation in quality in a lot of fields, but it’s very acute in long haul trucking. Why is that?

Also why are dump truck drivers even worse? It’s rare that you see one that isn’t driving like a maniac. Do the keys to those dump trucks come with a meth addition or is that just a popular add on?

Are America’s highways as functionally obsolete from your perspective as they seem to us 4 wheelers?

What is the best truck stops/travel centers along I-10 in Louisiana in terms of cleanliness? Quality of food? Tiger Truck stop in Grosse Tete looks pretty busy.

What’s the best road side food you’ve had in the gulf coast?

So you support increasing the standard weight capacity of 53’ dry vans used for interstate travel if we limited their speed to 65mph? With a third axle, the weight capacity could increase to match Canada’s max (at least during summer). This would make trucks more productive but it could mean fewer jobs.

What’s the best big rig brand for an owner-operator?

What are the best big rig jokes that you know?

BET,
Are there any regulations or other items created by the federal government that you think should be removed in order to make trucking more efficient and better optimized for all parties?

I've heard there are fitness and health issues for truckers due to lack of time (and place) to exercise, poor availability of healthy food, etc. Do you think this is a problem and what solutions do you see for it, if so?

Should logs and restrictions on work/rest cycles remain in effect, be abolished, or be altered? If altered, how so?

Thanks
as far a regulations by the feds, I really don't look into all that unless it's brought up by company policy to be inserviced on. I surely hope that 80k limit on weight doesn't increase of which I heard it could go to 100k. Screw that. I want these feds behind a desk to pull something 40k/60k/80k weight and see if they think it's totally safe. Truckers have a serious responsibility to pull those weights. You have to factor everything from following distance and what weather situations cause that distance to increase or decrease. Speed , terrain etc. Truckers are bouncing these hazards right off their heads and driving as safely as possible. It's really insanity when you think about it. Coupled with making sure all your equipment/parts/engine are all working fine.

We have alot of inservices on health/food/exercises in general. It is a problem. I'm considered obese I guess at 5"11 208 lbs but in mirror i look good because i do workout 3 days a week. Our company at every terminal has a full gym. The terminals are all over the country and literally like small cities. They have everything just about. That's not the case with other companies but. I do see Truckers at truck stops using the gym, walking around parking lot with their women and doing push ups and shite on side of their trucks actually. I use the hunter gatherers diet. Carbs and trucking are not your friend. Every stop I make inside my workflow using entails double drop n hook and sometimes triple drop and hook. Possibly also sweeping out your trailer depending(thats a dam job). Your gonna get plenty of exercise doing these things. So you get to move around too. I'm a dedicated driver not otr where I make stops everyday sometimes 2 stops. It is easy to have poor health and physical habits on this type of job.

I think they should be. All truckers have got to rest for at least 10 hours after an 14hrs to do 11hrs of driving work day. I'm trying to do 8-9.5 hrs driving only if I can. Some want to hustle more some are patient. I think more companies should adopt our way of doing logging electronically because I've been with 2 other companies and their logging is terrible. Ours is state of the art. We got rid of personal conveyance. I didn't like that but too many people were abusing it. PC is good to have on weekends when you away or almost to a destination and ur running out of time. Or your out of time for that day and your at a truck stop and you need to run to Walmart to get items, you can't cause you have no personal conveyance.

This is why "teams" have become big across America because the truck keeps moving.

First off, I understand truckers have a hard job. But, why is it necessary to clog the left lane for 15 minutes to pass another semi doing 1 mph less than you?
its crazy. For 1 or 2mph I allow my interactive cruise to back me off at 350 feet and I just suck it up. 3mph, I'm gonna closest possible without setting off buzzer and pass. Some people are not considerate or passive when it comes to passing like this. I would do it(1mph difference) in no traffic or a 3 lane but not a 2 lane.

What are most trucks governed at? Would it be easier if the lane was limited to a max or that speed? Or if there were signs posted instructing truck drivers to set cruise at a certain speed?

Changing lanes in a truck is a bitch. A minor mistake in those things can clog the road for hours and hours….and can be fatal. Seems like we should try to reduce the need to change lanes.

How many hours do you work? Are you paid hourly, mileage, etc? How much of your work time is out of state/on the road? I once had a neighbor who drove a truck for walmart and he once told me he made about the same as you and he was home almost every night.

It’s not a big rig, but I’ve had to use a 26’ Penske every time I’ve moved across the country. The time I pulled our Subaru on a trailer behind it…the truck’s Navistar-built engine just couldn’t move it very well.

Not exaggerating when I said that I could maybe do 0-60 in about 30 seconds. My biggest fear was those short on ramps, especially the ones around western Pennsylvania.

So I try to make space for y’all even if more of you are total jerks these days.

How do you exercise in that profession? A lot of y’all are quite large.

What are the disadvantages of being an owner operator? Is the equipment simply too high of a barrier to buy your own rig? Do you prefer working for an outfit over owning your own equipment?
to be an owner operator you have to become an LLC basically. You.have to purchase a good truck with a good warranty. I couldnt imagine buying used although alot of people do. Pay a note. Develop a list of clients that are reliable. There is an app that lists several conpanies and there loads available going where, how much pay and such. You pick or however its done. Run for these guys. Have bank account/credit card. Insurance is a mfer but you make alot. You have a fuel expenses and you have to put money aside for maintenance and repair and then pay yourself. After all that a good well managed owner operator can bank 150-200k. Many owner ops out there that make 12k a week and higher. You have to run it like a business and be strict. We have owner ops that run for my company I drive for and they even are trainers on top of that. They make 6 figures easy. Upper 100s.

This was my question. Do you have to be a owner operator for the spouse to tag along or will most companies allow it?
