quote:Thanks man. I appreciate it. Trucking is interesting. It's like a field trip especially when I go to new places.
enjoyed reading your responses to questions in this thread.
quote:it has changed alot esp. the pay, laws, etc. The most interesting part are the terminals that are at the trucker's disposal for my company. We have several terminals all over the country. We have giant warehouse sized mechanic shop/tire shop that's 24/7 around the clock where if you can stay there for a night or weekend when you off and need work done just check in your truck etc, a full sized car wash to wash your tractors, full sized trailer repair shop, driver headquarters with people willing to help, a full sized cdl school(our company will train you for your cdl right at one of our terminals), we have a hotel on premise and if they dont, they have one partnered nearby, a 2 story driver lounge that has big screens with a commons area, 10 individual shower rooms, washateria, gym, a store, snack room with vending machines, game room and a ton of new trucks outside ready to be given to drivers and a huge area with trailers.
trucking industry has changed tremendously since the 90's.
quote:I can't lie, when you find out the load is light especially maybe just 10k lbs, I get happily relieved that the trip will be an smooth one. Light loads are nice treats.
Our heaviest load out was 9200lbs.(Plastic bottles) Drivers, especially O/O loved the light loads
quote:some of the best practice is to do this kind of stuff as backings are the part that novice guys need more of practice wise. Fun challenge to do backings and such.
On weekends, I sometimes moved trailers in/out of our dock doors and always thought it'd be cool to drive full time.

quote:if you learn how to run it right , you become a corporation/LLC and buy your truck. Being an owner operator can be a 300-400k a year with banking half of that for yourself.
Can you make a better living independently or with a company? People always need pallets shipped.
You have to pay
Note
Pull your tax money
Fuel
Insurance for truck and health ins for yourself
Own a couple trailers for live loads
Maintenence back acct
Repair fund bank acct
Know how to 1099 and write off everything.
The above would be half of your earnings dedicated to those things. The other half is your take. Sounds like alot but they have alot of owners out there.
One truck running 5.5 days a week can make over 10k(and more) a week if you can take care of your logistic side and obtain loads.
Owner operator hot shot guys make a killing also.
The company side of it removes all of they above. You work for them and you get paid. Excellent insurance. Just drive. Depending on the job you can bank as a starter driver(no exp) easily 50-75k. Some starting positions at my company pay 92k annual for live unloading positions and 70k for drop n hook. Having experience in this industry is key. After having 1-3 yrs can usually gain you a daily position where your home nightly and off most weekends making decent money. Most tanker/fuel guys can make 80k on average and home every night and that's just Louisiana. Based in other states can get you more.
I backhaul pallets almost everytime I leave one of my HD stores. So yes.

quote:once you know your routes, you'll know where the restaurants are because some restaurants are connected to the truck stops. Some places(truck stops) I've been to, a resturant could be across the street or on the side. Home cooked food is much better. However, Inside of most all Love's truckstops, they have a healthy isle with all kinds of fresh fruit(alot of different kinds), different kinds of salads etc. But yes the food can be a task depending on what your eating. Petro truck stops usually have a resturant in them. Most Love's will have a fast food place or a pizza place in them. A few Love's I've been too will have a resturant(different business) right on the side. As far as TA or Flying J , I don't usually stay at those unless it's at night when other places id rather be at are full, nearing the end my clock and I'm scrambling for any place to stop and sleep. Only reason being is at those places truckers have to pay to park. All the fuel/def fluid and items we purchase, some truck stops still charge you to park. It's stupid imo. If im empty on fuel and I fill up, the ticket can reach 600/700 fricking bucks and a dam truck stop still wants frickin 18 bucks to park. Gtfoh with that
That has to be hard considering most truck stops I see just have fast food joints in them. No real restaurants....
On a side note, I do bring food in my truck from home that are more healthy to eat for the week etc. I have a fridge/microwave/air fryer on board and plenty of pantry/storage space so.

I enjoyed traveling with my dad some in the summer. As a reasonably poor family, we didn't take vacations ever, so going with him on a run was always a lot of fun. Staying in a hotel was like disney to a kid in the 70's especially if they had a pool and you got to eat in a restaurant.
My dad drove Fords, then they went to Macks. Man, I would do that in a heartbeat if I wasn't married.

I told my wife it would be a great retirement gig. See the country and get paid, but haven't convinced her yet.
You probably said this earlier in the thread, but what do you drive?

Probably trying to weed out those who leave trash/piss bottles/diapers everywhere and clean out the trailer on premises.
Or having to pay someone to clean up the mess

quote:What's crazy is there are trash barrels to dispose of trash. Love's and Petro don't charge for over night trucker parking. That's why I stay there as much as I can. Those truck stops make millions off of the diesel. They don't need to charge especially trucks who purchase their fuel.

Has your truck seat treated your rear end well or do you need to buy some specialized seat cushions? My son is also a driver and he found that those cushions are well worth the cost.
He has also switched to specialized diabetic socks for circulation issues.
