quote:you are moving the goal posts. I did not say that cost of living is the same, I said there isn't much of a difference in overall tax burden, regardless of the fact that there is no state income tax in Texas. You listed reasons why living in Texas were a positive, all I am saying is that unless you are renting or make 7 figures, no state income tax doesn't really belong on your list. Has nothing to do with overall cost of living or the quality of schooling. Just taxes.
It’s not a fallacy. You said cost of living is the same. If you roughly say that higher property tax is offset by no state income tax it’s a wash.

I’m not defending Louisiana. But I enjoy my life here and I’m glad you enjoy yours.
That’s all that matters. Like I said, diehards love it and more power to them. I’m more arguing for the people that want out but are scared to make the plunge.

You literally said “The cost of living between SE Louisiana and the Greater Houston area, for instance, is basically the same, FYI.”

No way. If you live outside of inner Houston, public schools are pretty good. Not the case for Nola suburbs, minus the northshore.
Way more job opportunities, better hospitals and housing is way cheaper and better. So you dont have to waste money on stupid catholic schools because your kids aren’t going to school with criminals in Public schools.
That alone makes cost of living in greater Houston better.
You don’t understand cost of living, do you?
I’m guessing you haven’t gotten a property tax bill yet. Those threads each fall with TX residents strategizing on how to contest their assessment must be an anomaly.

No state income tax
its just a different tax model, it really doesn't make a big difference in the overall tax burden when you factor in the high property taxes in Texas for most people
The property tax difference is far less than the cost of sending ONE kid to a parochial/private school while other costs such as energy per kwh, insurance, sales tax and other items is lower in Texas. And property tax is on a steady rise in New Orleans as the politicians bu more votes by taxing the working to support the moochers who keep them in office.
In 2019 the median property tax in Louisiana was $795 compared to $2775 in Texas. Is your family income is over $100,000 the income tax in Louisiana is around $3500 where it would be ZERO in Texas. With another 6% on any income above $100,000.

I pay $6k a year in property taxes roughly on a house that’s wayyyy better than anything I could get for the same price InThe Nola area. I pay zero for schools, less in auto insurance, flood insurance and have little to no crime, bad roads, etc.
I’m coming out way ahead cost of living and more importantly quality of living wise

Spending up here by individual counties is all over the place..and depending on the cities and towns..that too. Where I'm at I'm staying as long as my rent stays cheap. My landlord loves me as I help them and my neighbors and I pay less than half of what the average market is here and it's for a home not an apartment. When it does become too pricey then I'll head out to eastern Washington North of Spokane. But if someone moves here... Just remember two words.. King County. Avoid it like the plague.

You would be well-advised to GTFO of La. ASAP, believe me.
Do not stay here because of family or friends or sentimentality of any kind.
You have a very bright future for you and your family, but, only if you do some research and settle in a location that is not the worst of them all.

We're working on moving to NC at the moment. Good mix of business development and economic growth, not as crazy as the I-95 corridor when it comes to population/traffic, still affordable, etc.
The pay is secondary in this situation because we’ve always valued family over pay. The issue is that our most important family used to be our parents and siblings. Now it’s our children.

When you make a quarter million a year you can afford to fly family to you a few times a year...

I have no clue where in Central Texas you live, but I have access to the ACCRA Cost of Living database, which is considered by most demographers, economic researchers, etc. as the most accurate model available. Information is updated quarterly based on changes in housing, taxes, etc.
So I pulled Covington, LA to Round Rock, TX. COLA is within 5%...which falls in the standard deviation of the model given unknowns of exact neighborhood location, type of vehicle ownership, etc.
But continue on with your feel good that you're saving money.
As stated earlier, I'm not going to argue the quality of living standard because that's dependent on the individual.

We have the second-lowest average IQ in the country which means that, when you take into account intelligence distribution, we have somewhere between 5-10% more completely dysfunctional adults compared to the average state and 5-10% less highly intelligent adults than the average state.
That’s a recipe for disaster when it comes to functioning society.

Would be curious on Comal county. And does your cost of living factor in private school costs?
