I have been told that "hitting and running" is a fairly common way for young boys to disfunctionally express that they like a girl because they have not yet developed the social skills to properly express it. It doesn't make it ok. The boy needs to be taught that this isn't a proper way to express yourself. But the hospital employee probably isn't wrong. And the mother is way off base on the implications of the statement.
