My understanding is that the Canary Islands was the mid point/holding area for Spanish travelers coming to Americas. Awaiting their chance at getting on a boat, and/or their papers to be able to come over as you described. High percentage of people in the Americas, with Spanish heritage going back generations, will find a connection to the CI.
Also read somewhere that the population of the CI was getting out of control with all the humping going on due to the island climate/living. Eventually expediting the voyages.

There were some sustainability issues with the islands (Gomera) after the Orchil crops failed (1770ish), Nobles raised taxes which lead to economic decline and an uprising against the Nobles.
Some of the same issues prevailed in Tenerife, although of all the islands, Tenerife fared much better. Cooked with the fall of the wine trade, drought, and locust invasions from Africa.
These issues plus others made emigration to Louisiana preferable to staying on the islands.
I'm also almost positive I've read where the King of Spain was forcing many people to leave.
